Most compressors have a capacitor that stores energy for start-up.
Sometimes these capacitors can blow for several reasons, check the capacitor first and replace it as necessary, and then isolate the problem if it blows again.

The W208's had clutched compressors (at least mine did), but the W209's may have gone to the variable speed compressors like the W211's have. I can't say for sure, but based on your comments, you probably have the variable speed style compressor.

What? Maybe in a residential or commercial HVAC unit, but our belt driven compressors most certainly do not have a capacitor.

You should be able to see it pretty easily on the front of the engine, what does it look like? Starting with a clutch is not really good diag, put gauges on it and verify system charge, then if you have everything working but no activity from the compressor, you have an idea of what to check. If there is no clutch, it has a variable displacement compressor with a refrigerant control valve (RCV) on it, which dictates the amount of pumping it does rather than a simple on-off. They do stick and fail, best thing to do is get a scanner on it and watch the live data, see if the compressor current is going up when you are asking for more cooling, but the pressure isn't changing. This is the most common failure method on the RCV equipped compressors, the valve sticks closed and you get no cooling. Sometimes a good hard rev of the engine will shock it back to life for a bit, but that isn't always true.
