Differences in M113.987 and .988?

Hi CLK Fam,

I am replacing my C55 AMG motor with one from a 2004 CLK55 AMG. The C55 is a M113.988 and the CLK55 (from 04) is a M113.987. I'm assuming this will be a plug and play install but was wondering if there was any real major differences between the two motors?

Thank you!

i would expect w203 and w209 to be similar enough where its very close to plug and play, but there might be slight differences around oil pan and coolant hoses.

I'd second that - the differences (if any) are probably extremely minimal - the C55 has a W209 front clip.

I replaced the N/A 5.0 M113 on my R129 with an AMG 5.4 M113 from a W220 and noticed the same thing. It turns out the codes refer to the intake manifolds and wiring harness of the chassis-specific model only. The engine block is identical and is plug-and-play. As long as you use your existing wiring harness, intake manifold, and throttle body, you are fine.

I replaced my engine with zero issues, smooth as butter.

Yes, the intake manifold on W220 S55 AMG was different from my R129 SL500
Throttle body as well was different.

Sure agreed, throttle is differ, due to "ME2.0" vs "ME2.8" on 00-06 "W220's",

but i don't think intake manifold is different,,

can you pls. forward some pics. of "W220 S55" intake manifold, it will be great to see what's the special thing with it..

I will try my best to dig up something, 3 years ago was a long time.
But I'll try my best and see if my mechanic has anything saved.

Just as a heads up for anyone else who comes across this thread as I did.
The C55 is essentially a w209 clk55 from the firewall forward. If the 55 fit in a w203 there wouldn't have been a C32. So, when they got stubborn they just decided to graft the front end off the clk onto the C55 so the 55 would fit.
So, yeah, it will fit no problem...
