Clk55 AMG Cousin: C32 AMG Sports Coupé

This new C32 AMG Sports Coupé is a hot performer!

Both are built on the C platform. Can both survive?

It pisses me off...

that the C32 Coupe AMG gets the dual exhaust treatment (one on each side) and the CLK 55 still doesn't!!

What's more interesting is that the C32 sportcoupe gets dual exhaust and the C32 sedan doesn't, and what should really **** you off is that the C32 sportcoupe comes with a $4000 wheel upgrade 18-in AMG Multipiece Styling I (aka SL 2-piece) with 18x8.5 in front and 18x10 in the rear.

Anyway, the C32 sportcoupe is still an "AMG-Special" vehicle. None of the special vehicles have ever come to the USA. Only when they become "AMG-series" vehicles do they come here.

The existing C sports coupe is NOT selling well in the US.

Another $15,000 for AMG mods would bring the car in the $42,000 range. Throwing good money after bad?

The C32 sportcoupe may get better wheels, dual pipes etc, however the price for the C32 sedan, and the C32 sportcoupe in the UK is the same.

I know which one i'd buy for that money...

Two points:
The Sportscoupe is selling quite well in the US. Mercedes hoped to sell 15000 of them in the first year, they've sold 12500 in the first nine months of sales. Current sales have been average about 1300-1500 a month. To put this in perspective, for April 2002 BMW sold 2142 3-series coupes and MB sold 1438 C230Ks - I think 2/3s the sales of the 3-series coupe is pretty good, this is slightly better than the sales difference between the C-sedan (4133) vs. the 3-series sedan (6545). Worldwide Coupe sales are even better (only in the US do people think hatchbacks are "cheap") with 59000 coupes sold so far.

As for the price of the C32 AMG SportsCoupe Special, the price tag in GB is 40,000 pounds = $58000 US; not exactly cost effective when compared to the price of an AMG Series vehicle.

Cheers, BT

If correct, this data is indeed impressive. Dealers here have a hard time selling the C sports coupe...perhaps a regional quirk.

Could be... the coupe sells so well in this area the dealers usually don't deal - MSRP gets you out the door; down in Southern CA they will deal below MSRP, but I don't think they have a hard time moving them. Of course, here in the SF Bay Area the numbers of MBs rolling around are ridiculous. For comparative purposes, I usually spot 1-2 E55s a day, a CLK55 every second or third day and about a CL55 per week. Considering the low volumes of these AMG cars, I imagine one could go weeks in other parts of the country without seeing a single one of these.

Trench, I don't know if you get down to LA often, but I've lived here all my life. If you think the Bay Area's ridiculous, So. Cal is completely absurd. On a given day I'll see about 5 '03 SL500s, 2 or 3 S55s or CL55s, 4+ CLK55s, and literally dozens of CLK320s and 430s. I often find myself at a stoplight with 4 Benzes, sometimes all the same color . LA never ceases to amaze me- saw 3 Aston Martin Vanquishes yesterday .

I agree, LA's probably the best place in the world for what would be considered rare vehicular sightings elsewhere in the world. Although, even with the dot-bomb bust I still see plenty of expensive cars cruising around up here - although we never have the same numbers of Ferrari's and other more exotic makes I see down south.

The LA and SF metro areas are probably the only parts of the entire US where you see more foreign than domestic cars (excluding SUVs, of course!).

Funny, as I was typing this, a Cobra just blasted by my office at about 75 mph and 120 db.
