questions about the 55 engine

I just got a slk55 and I have questions about the engine.

1. every time I start it it revs up to about 1500 rpm just before settling down to about 6 or 8 hundred, is this normal?

2. Did you guys really wait 10,000 miles before the first oil change?

cheers

Yes, although on mine it's a tad bit lower, around 1200.

I did it at the recommended maintenance schedule, whatever that was...synthetic oil lasts for a lot longer than mineral, so going 10,000 on synthetic doesn't worry me in the slightest.

Ditto what Improviz said.

But, I change the oil/filter at 5K intervals. It's not the oil I'm concernaed about, I want that filter changed more frequently than every 10K.

Talking

Mine revs the same esp when its cold outside. After the first fulll stop and go it settles down to arund 800 or less. As far as the maintenance I stick to the 10k schedule and haven't had any issues becuase of it and I just turned 50k on my car!! Hope this helps

The revs you guys are talking about are a MINIMAL warm up cycle for your vehicle. You should never drive the car without allowing it to drop down below 1000 rpm. I still take it easy until up to at least 60 degrees celsius, but during break-in, you MUST idle to ~80 degrees celsius (full operating temperature). This is critical not only to warm up the engine, but the transmission as well. Your engine will do it's "break in" far before your transmission is broken in. By waiting to warm up your engine, you make sure your transmission is warmed up and produces the best shifts. You also don't want to shift hard. I recommend keeping it in comfort mode after the first 40 miles or so. I didn't really intend to start a break-in discussion, but these are the basics. Please don't ruin that amg engine or transmission. Anyway, have fun, exercise discipline and you will have some of the best dyno numbers and longest lasting parts to be found. Remember, you probably won't post your best 0-60 or 1/4 mile times until 15k-20k miles.

It never has made much sense to me why it revs so high when you start it. There can't be very much oil in the engine and that is when the the most wear occurs. But there is nothing you can do about it. I let it sit for a minute until the RPM's come down to 800 before driving off. I baby it until the engine temp reaches normal, never exceeding 3000rpm. There is a lot of debate about oil changes. I go 5000 miles. You can never overdo the oil changes.

If I keep this car for awhile. I still want to be able to have that performance with a lot of miles on it 5 years down the road. Without worrying about major malfunctions with pistons, rods, valves and such.

Even though it may sound somewhat contrary, it's my understanding that the fact that all of the engine oil is down in the pan is part of the reason why the engine revs up a bit at start-up. In addition to aiding warm-up, it's also done to build up oil pressure quickly in order to lubricate the top end. I assume that the benefit of faster pressure build up exceeds the detriment of more revs without oil...

Matt

I agree with everything that Rguy has said except for the statement about waiting until the engine reaches full operating temperature before driving (during break-in). I do believe that it IS important to allow the engine to warm up for a minute or two, and to avoid high revs/loads (After break-in) until the engine is up to full operating temperature, but I think that waiting for it to idle to full operating temperature isn't necessary, and potentialy disadvantageous because of potential carbon build-up. Having said that though, I'm not an expert, and this is just my opinion...

The engine revs higher and shifts later when cold to allow the cat conv. to warm up fully and start functioning....

Kind of 'strange' that in Asia countries, our common recommended first oil change is 10,000 km , not miles.
