Caliper Questions???????

How much bigger is the caliper of a 2001 CLK55 than a 2001 CLK430. Any info will be appreciated.

There aren't really any standard specifications for how big a caliper is. What exactly do you mean? Like, is it 10% bigger?

scorchie, doesn't the 55 have double piston front calipers while the 430 is only single piston. Pad area is also a factor.

AMG rotor size is larger and it is floating... connected to the hub by like 13 pins? Assists in cooling the discs.

I need to know about the W208 CLK55. Is the caliper the same as a CLK430 W208?

Huh!? On the W208 CLK55 (all years), the rotor is multipiece, with the disc connected to the hat by many stainless steel pins (as Al stated). For the W209, the rotors are solid one piece. Except maybe 2005, I am not familiar with that.

Anyhow, he's asking about the caliper, not the rotor.

Xking72, you asked if the calipers are the same size... they are not. Yes, they are bigger on the CLK55. I don't know how to define how they are bigger, but yes, they are bigger.

MBAMG,

The 03-04 W209 CLK500/CLK55 have the same braking system. They come with a 4 piston brembo brakes. Although, the CLK500 does not have the crossed drilled holes for ventilation. The CLK55 DO have the cross drilled holes! Rotor size is the same. And also the CLK500 has the word MERCEDES BENZ printed on the caliper VS. the CLK55 that say AMG.

Scorchie, the 2005 CLK55 brakes are still 1 piece... not sure what Neal was thinking of.

2002 E55 AMG
So about the whole new AMG brakes, are they all brembo's? I guess they were made for cosmetic reasons? The W210 E55 and others had pretty plain looking brakes.

Yes the NEW W211 E55 AMG or the C55 have the new 6 piston Brembo AMG brakes. They look really HOT! Even the C32 brake kit is brembo but only 4 piston. Here is the E55 retro fitted into a W203.

On my own E55 and in that picture, I seem to count 8 pistons...

2002 E55 AMG
What are the advantages and disadvantages about the leading caliper design and traling design? Does it matter where the caliper is placed?

I dont know what your talking about. Your trying to say the W208 AMG rotors look similar to a brembo kit with the 2 peice look?

the 2005 CLK55 brakes are just like the SLK55 brakes. They are a 2 peice rotors on the front. you must be thinking of the 04 and under CLK55 brakes with a 1 peice rotor like on the C32 and C55.

55 brakes

I think we are all a little confused.....

SLK55 will have 6 piston fronts
E55 (211) has 8 Piston fronts
CLK55 / C55 share the same brakes - 4 piston front. Unfortunate that MB/AMG did not at least give them the nice looking 6 piston jobs like the SLK. You will notice that the caliper look of the 6/8 piston is far more agressive than the 4's - regardless they all stop very well....

which CLK55 you talking about? 02 and under? if not only the 03-04 CLK55 have the same brakes as the C55. The 2005 CLK has the SLK55 brakes.
