Pros & Cons: Larger Tires on Standard wheels?

The standard AMG monoblocks wheels are 7.5 X 17 for the front, 8.5 X 17 for the rear.

Is there any advantage in using larger tires than the standard 225/45/17 for the front & 225/40/17 for the rear on the standard wheels?

I have been considering this too. I think it would look nicer having wider tires in the back. They look pretty whimpy at 245/40. It should grip better. It may slightly throw off the balance from understeer to oversteer for example or something along those lines. I do not plan to use my car at a track and will rarely if ever have it handling at 10/10th's of its maximum so that point is irrelevent to me.
What is the widest tire the stock wheel will handle both front and (most importantly) rear?

For the standard FRONT wheel - 7.5 J X 17 - the max. width is 235and

For the standard rear wheel - 8.5 J X 17 - the max. width is 255.

As per many charts, incl. this Potenza S-03, the best rated tire according to the forum sponsor Tirerack.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...+Pole+Position

It's strange.

I listed this question under the "Wheels & Tire..." section and so far ZERO response.

Increased tire WIDTH is the most inexpensive way of improving appearance & handling: $60.- per set of tires!!

This question really depends on your driving style. If you're going to go with 19's it will look really nice but watch out for them potholes. One serious hit and that's an expensive wheel/tire to fix.

My question relates to wider tires on the same stock wheels, NOT larger wheels.

Can one use wider tires on the standard 17" wheels?

Standard front tires: 225/45/17.
Increase to 235/45/17?

Standard rear tires: 245/40/17.
Increase to 255/40/17?

I think wider tires for the rear just makes it better because the wider the tire the better the grip more rubber. The only con i can think of is that wider tires are probably a little bit more expensive.

I would suggest that this question be posted on the tire forum of this site. Luke, of TireRack, is very good at answering questions like this one.

All of them, as much as I can...
My 2c worth...

I think you'd have to go 235/40/17 and 255/35/17 if it's available. This way, the diameter won't increase too much.. Less likelihood of ESP/ABS/speedo calibration getting screwed up. Also, if you have Comand, you'd have to re-calibrate; but that's easy.

The diameter difference is exactly plus .3" or 1/4" for the 235/45 v 225 and 255/40 v 245. That's the equivalent of 1/8" surface tire wear - insignificant.

The revolutions per mile are 10 less for front and 10 less for the rear: 833 v 823 and 840 v 830.

the standard AMG monoblock are 225/45/17 in the front and 245/40/17 at the rear.

Changing tire sizes will affect the handling characteristics of your car. Dont play around with them.

If u change to larger rims like 8x18 and 9x18, then tire size should be 235/40/18 in the front and 265/35/18 in the rear.

Aha.

Sorry, I was never good at math, especially METRIC math

So, Karl, I'm beginning to think you're on the right track for traction upgrade; rather than the disastrous path I took on my 55 with the 19's. I'm sure you've read about my woes.
So why not 265's in the back? The 235s will probably be just about flush with the fender lip, but the 255s will be too fan inside the well?

265/40 are not made in the Potenza RE 730 tire model line, which I decided to get.

So, I decided to go with the

235/45/17 front tires on the standard 7.5 J 17 ///AMG monoblock rims and

255/40/17 rear tires on the standard 8.5 J 17 ///AMG monoblock rims.

The Bridgestone Potenza RE730 tires have a treadwear rating of 300.

The original Michelin Pilot Sport tires have a treadwear of 220.

Here are the specs for the RE730:
