First CEL

Had a peculiar thing happen today. Fired up the car and was just driving casually out of town when I got a CEL and the engine started to run rough. So I stopped, turned it off, then right back on. CEL gone and running properly. Took it to the dealer who read the code and said "Need to order a new cam sensor". It ran fine for the next 50 miles, up to and including parking in the garage. AS

Hi Alex,

Do you happen to know what a "cam sensor" actually does?

Is it somehow related to the camshaft?

Cam sensor

indicates the position of the camshaft to the ecu so the ecu knows that the #1 piston is coming up on top dead center. This activates the fuel injection ,that is why the engine ran crappy ,it will run with a bad cam sensor it just won't run well because it is not sending the values needed.
If you are off warranty it is an easy diy as it is always located on the front of the head in front of the number 1 cylinder which on usa cars is passenger side cylinder 1.This is the simplified explanation ,The rest about how the ecu takes the values and integrates it with the crankshaft position sensor and all the other sensors is a long long story but you get the basic idea.

same thing happened to my s550. I didnt notice a difference in how the car ran however. I didnt take it in for a few months cuz it would go away and come back like clockwork. Each time i had an appointment the light would go off. Go figure.

I had the same thing happen to mine at about 1000 miles. Cam position sensor. Mine actually failed and it shut down one entire side of the motor. The car would barely move so I had it flatbedded to the dealer. Fixed and nothing wrong since.
