Track tires

Has anyone tried the Toyo R888's on the track?
It looks like Tire Rack may have a suitable wheel available which would allow 305's in the rear and maybe 295's up front.

The Corsa's are a great tire but I think the 888's might be a bit stickier.

I'd love to hear about any other track tires you might have tried.

Don't have any experience in those but from what i've heard from people who have, they only have positive things to say about it and that it's really stickier than most other tires.

Just curious if anyone has tried 315's on the rear? And if so what is your experience on it?

CLK AMG BLACK SERIES (among other German things)
ive used toyo 888 , in fact i run a 993 rsr on them . they are good tyres but seem to work better with light cars the heavier the car the more the tyre seems to "shift" in corners and direction changes etc
can feel unsettled and worry the uninitiated . you must use the force ......

I'm tempted too by the Toyo R888s. Their website show Japanese cars whizzing around a track. They weigh less than CLKs.

But what I really want to know is-- how would they do in the rain? Obviously one shouldn't push them hard in the wet, but are they reasonably safe? How would they compare with pilot cups, corsas or other street-legal track tires for traction in the wet?

I gots to know 'cause I'm thinking of Nurburgring this September - and it tends to rain there.

surprisingly good in the rain , better than cups , by far . still not the best in standing water but still better than the cups . not as good as corsa systems in the wet or standing water . i would say the black is probably not the best tyre for a toyo 888 .
if you go to the ring put up a thread i can get a couple of mates from here and we can show em what a black can do

Based on porsche guys who've run them the R888 are a little squirmy coming out of the corners. Consenses seem to be inferrior to the Corsa's although they have a great size selection.

Why don't you just put on a set of Hoosiers, so we can live vicariously.

Because like you, I drive to and from the track in the track car.

Thanks to all for the comments and possible weight issues, I'll inquire further about that and let you know what I learn.

Jim,

The Hoosiers seem too light on the weight rating for the sizes we would run.

I'll be sure to post - I did last year on the main forum when I first drove the 'ring with the AMG Driving Academy. But you may be disapointed becasue I won't be dressed in basic black - i have a 208 CLK 55. Last year it was the oldest car on the track. To keep up with those 63s I am busy putting cards up my sleeve ... starting with a Kleemann ECU and headers, then moving on to a Quaife LSD and KW V2s.

I called the AMG Driving Academy to see if they could fit me in this year but the event was full unless you were bringing your own car.

WTDoom, you should join up. It is September 6 to the 8th I believe.

You might be right, but I'm not going to be running max gross vehicle weight on the track, in fact I'll be as light as possible so the Hoosiers rating should be
ok as their rated at 1168 on the front.
I've seen several E55 on Hoosiers and they survived a hot weekend, I think they'll work on the BS. Of course, I don't want to be first that's why I was encourging Mike to take one for the team.

It is not a US thing at all. It is the European AMG Driving Academy.

Here is the link:

http://www.mercedes-amg.com/driving-...tro&sub=events

Just select english and either full screen or whatever.

This is their yearly event at the North loop. One day at the saftey center and two private days on the north loop.

It is a fantastic event. You can bring your own car or rent one from them for the event.

It is considered a pro level event for them but you can get a waiver if you can prove that you have track experience. Sounds like this is not a problem for you.

Send me a PM if you want more details. I have done a few events with them. All have been incredible.

I just tried to order from Tire Rack the 9" & 10" wide 19" OZ Ultraleggera with 265-35-19 Ft & 295-30-19 Rr RA Hooisers and had a warning window pop up that the tire is too light for the CLK63 BS.

So.... knowing how the Corsa's feel, question is should I now try the Pilot Sport Cups..

Or the TOYO R888's that come in 265-30-19 & 295-30-19 sizes.?

I sent a note to OZ asking about the 11" x 19's but no response yet.

Neither Luke (tire forum here) or Damon (6speed) from Tire Rack have responded yet.

If the bigger wheel is available, the Bridgestone RE-11 seems to be getting some good press. Sizes are 275 and 305 x 30 x 19.

If the 11" x 19" has the same back spacing as the 10" then it looks to be too tight.
The 10" x 19" just fits nicely with about 3/8" between it and the coil over.

I dont own a CLK63 BS but I've had my car (CLK55) on the roadcourse a few times. I've tried Toyo RA1's as well as Toyo R888's and Michelin PS2's. The R888 felt great to me (I am not at the track very often) and does well in the rain. By well in the rain I mean driving normal, I have not tried pushing it. And to give you an idea of how sticky they are I got bored watching a few friends drag race one night and decided to make a pass on my street setup, with soft launch it cut a 1.68 60' and no tire spin whatsoever. Now that being said, I tried launching it on my next pass and ended up sideways half way down the track

Heh, BB, gotta love power oversteer - even with the Quaife?!

What size Toyo R888s were you running?

Lol yea even with the quaife. With street tires I can break em loose at 50mph pretty easily

Let me double check but I think it was 275/35/18 in the rear. They actually run wider than the RA1's. I had a bit of rubbing when I switched to the R888's in the same size. Maybe its just the offset on my kinesis wheels

Thanks for checking - did you also have the R888s on the front axle?
