California Registration Cost
For those of you living in California, I am interested in finding out what is your DMV registration cost. Reason for asking is I just received my bill and it is $1700. I do think this is a bit high and wanted to see for a fair comparison what are other Black owners paying. Thanks.

Wow, $1700? I bought mine brand new in November of 2007 and paid $940 for registration. I just paid my 2010 registration and it was $1344, and that includes $30 for the special plate fee. I remember when I bought cars in the mid 1990's and it was a little more than 1% of the selling price.

CA registrations have more than doubled since last year - last year= $480 - due on Jan 2nd 2010 = $1152. Doesn't any one watch the news ? Check out your CA Earthquake Authority premium if you carry 'quake insurance - it's doubled too.

Kiss your local Politician
This is what they do best. Well, come to think of it, it's all they do. Tax and spend, tax and spend. We have anti-capitalists running the country. They simply do not understand. And sadly, never will.

Makes no sense to me that someone with a more expensive car should pay more. It's not like a more expensive car is more of a burden on the state or receives more benefits from the highway system.
Makes about as much sense to start putting a yearly tax on owning artwork or nice suits :-)

O come now. This is the strategy of politicians for decades... tax the hell out of the upper-class, and in time everybody will be well off.

Mine was $1309. I read that the state was going to raise their fees a while ago. I didnt realize they were going to Rob people but I knew they were raising the fees. This is to make up for the California state Defecit. Has anyone noticed that in some areas, parking meters are until 8 P.M. now instead of 6 and some places you have to pay on sundays too. I know its like that in Westwood by UCLA. Anyway, i guees we have to pay to play.

I have to also mention that the LA County property tax assessor seems to think my house is worth $500,000 MORE than what I paid for it 4 years ago. I guess my house is the only house in the state that has actually APPRECIATED during the recession.
It’s really become an absolute JOKE living in California.

They are trying to make money anyway they can. In my neighborhood is so much heat lately, that I got a ticket in my driveway. Had nothing to do with safety, but everything with revenue. Now I'm just waiting for the gas prices to hit $5 a gallon. Well, at least it's warm and sunny here

I agree with this. Same thing happened in my neighborhood a couple of months back. That one night this parking office ticketed about 30+ cars just in our street alone. Which these cars have been parking there for years and years and all of a sudden ticket? Total BS.

That's actually not that bad. A new CLK63 Black Series cost $2,089 for one year when new, in ATL
A new SL65 BS is expected to run over $3K annually for the next few years.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh, dammit!!!! Don't give the libs anymore ideas. I think they've done enough. Also, I am so sorry you live in Commiefornia. I am originally from Chicago, but I have lived in Florida for the last 15 years. We have so many more freedoms here, but the Libtards are getting more and more control.
I went back to Illinois recently and went to a gun store with a cop friend. They wouldn't even let me hold a gun without a FOID card. What?

I often wondered why is it that republicans label anyone with a different political viewpoint as 'communist'. If CA was indeed communist (with a republican governor, however), we would all be paying the same flat fee to register our cars. I paid almost $1000 recently to register my car in CA, so I feel everyone's pain. Here is an idea that should make everyone here happy: Let's charge the poor people, you know, those who drive the really cheap cars, a flat $1000 DMV fee. This way, we can encourage them to use our wonderful communist public transportation system, and as a bonus we will see much less of those cheap ugly cars around.

Broke as a joke Cali almost doubled the reg fees after April 2009- My Porsche is more on renewal 2 years after I bought it. Each year the reg fees are supposed to drop about 10% in Cali but the recent hike made even older cars' fees more than they have been in years prior.
The fees are based on the cash price or capitalized cost (if you lease). So your reg fees are high(er) because of how much the car cost you. How much did you pay and what year did you acquire the car?
Traffic tickets are up too- 700 bail for an 85 in a 65 ... ouch!! California sucks ... at times.

The way we are taxed in California is no secret...however, doing something FAIR like basing vehicle registration on weight and fuel economy would make the most sense. More often than not, what makes sense is sidestepped for what generates the most revenues. I guess since I work harder for my money I should pay more

In the past California reg went like this:
2.0% of the cost was the original fee (on 100k, the fee was 2k)
1.8% of the cost the following year
1.6% of the cost the following year
1.4% of the cost the following year
and so on.
Then we got the magical VLF offset which cut these fees back more than 50%.
But the state cant seem to make a profit so we lost the offset and are back to numbers in between.
