The problem is finding an upholstery shop that will actually do it for you (most don't do steering wheels). Often you have to go to a steering wheel specialty shop for them to reupholster it for you (there are a few on ebay but they usually charge a fortune to redo a steering wheel).

Alcantara isn't very good for steering wheels, it wears and becomes slick. Looks good new, lousy used. I had a Momo race wheel on a porsche and it looked terrible after one year.

Dallas Custom Wheel will do it, but like Jim said, maybe it's a bad idea for longevity reasons... I seem to remember when BMW put Alcantara on the M3 ZCP wheels and they were supposedly not lasting very long. I dont want to ruin my rare steering wheel.

Did they just wrap some more leather and alcantara on top of the old leather? Seems like you need some BIG hands to grab that fat rim!

Just like Brady said, you would hate it after a short time.

If you were to get it done, only do it Half and Half like in the picture, that way the Grips where you will apply the most pressure can be done on solid Leather.

CLK AMG BLACK SERIES (among other German things)
dont do it .
it will look out of place and not very good to the touch after a short time unless you always drive in race gloves .

.
The only thing I would change on the steering wheel is to make it fatter and spongy like the E9X M3's.

Thanks everyone, seems like a bad idea then, and I agree after hearing your opinions... thanks for saving me some time and $$$!

I'll put it toward the Carbonio intake now...

maybe you can do something like this. Take to DCT Motorsports, I think they can do anything with steering wheels

IF you use true automotive grade alcantara it will never wear and last the life of the car. There is only one importer of this fabric and its very pricey at $90 a yard. Gulf Fabrics is the only company that imports it and its a synthetic alcantara not a natural suede. Had it for many years and zero sign of wear and it feels/looks just as good as OEM alcantara (if not better). Never stains either too, just clean with damp cloth. You will need one yard to do a steering wheel.

(Not even momo or OEM's use this high of a quality alcantara, its extremely hard to come by but its the best stuff on earth).

This steering wheel looks great. I have an Alcantara steering wheel on my M and really like it.

Wow, that one is pretty nice looking!

I had the E46 as well, but not the ZCP package with Alcantara wheel.

I say go for it!
DCTMOTORSPORTS offers custom Alcantara sport steering wheels with matched shifters.
You can put the Alcantara on the top and bottom of the wheel where your hands hardly touch.

Contact DCT Motorsports. They do Alcantara + carbon fiber work for steering wheels. They are a sponsor on MBworld.
