E-brake cable

So I'm having trouble getting my emergency brake (parking brake) set correctly by the dealer. It's going back for the 5th time next week!

But the reason for the thread is to ask if anyone remembers the comments about a TSB or campaign to replace the cable because they've been melting at a point near the exhaust?

I've searched every word I could think of related to the issue and I can't find any reference to the problem.

The service dep't mgr couldn't find a TSB either but he did see the melted area.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Tell them to look in their Sept. 2009 Technical Conference Call notes. It was the 3rd topic that month, there is a heat resistant sheath, part #2094200177 that is to be installed over the front parking brake cable. Of course, if it has already melted, the cable housing needs replaced first.

interesting. My car was just delivered today, and the e-brake wouldn't release or set properly. is this indicative of the melting issue?

thx

Sounds plausible but I won't guarantee that's the problem. Thanks to Nick, you don't have to let your dealer play trial and error with fixing it.

I always (or just after 1rst trackday ?) had issue with the parking brake of my CLK BS since I own it (4 years)
Thanks for this tread, that identified the issue.
My cable is totally melted

Unfortunately the heat resistant sheath, part #2094200177, is no longer available and was not present on my car.
My workshop will try with thermal sheath used on competition car to do something that will not die after a single trackday.

Yes, very common issue. Happened to me too. Had to get the whole cable replaced and custom made this "heat shield". Luckily with an auto trans this is not an essential issue.
