Its too bad the picture of the door plate on the Red BS posted above did not include the AMG Serial# so we could see how low it was. Which is also a little strange since my AMG Serial # sticker is right next to the door plate and I wonder why it appears to be missing from the picture.

Possible the tag is exclusive to only AMG Performance Studio builds, regardless of chassis?

If that would be the case, the CLK's should go from 300 to 800, and the SL65 BS from 800 to 975. Should have looked at the AMG number at that SL65 BS when I had the chance.

Once again appears no rhyme or reason for the numbering...especially when 175 SL65BS were built and the one tag shows "2500".
Odd for a German company to not be logical...

Trying to decode the AMG plate using CLK63 and SL65 Black series data:
First three digits after AMG = chassis designation.
Fourth and fifth digits changed from 37 ( CLK ) to 47 (SL)
Possible SLK was 17 and CLK DTM 27?
Sixth digit = year
Remaining digits beginning with 1Y XXXXXX production sequence number?
All this to say that there is some logic, but still not clear on production sequence number meaning.

AMG was made quite a presentation of the SLK55 Black Series at the 2006 Nurburgring Driver Training event in September 2006. I presumed that it was a pre-release preview of the car.
There were multiple CLK-DTM Coupes in attendance at the event, so they were already in customer's hands at that time.

The numbering system might be different. I might be mistaken, but I think the CLK-DTM was in production prior to the SLK55 Black Series.
AMG was made quite a presentation of the SLK55 Black Series at the 2006 Nurburgring Driver Training event in September 2006. I presumed that it was a pre-release preview of the car.

If I recall 100 DTM coupes were MY 05 and 80 Cabs MY 06 ?
Therefore they were before the SLK 55 BS

Also, we have now seen three CLK BS cars with 11/07 build dates and AMG Serial numbers ranging from 538 to 694. I doubt almost half the U.S. productiion took place in that month considering production started in 4/07

Good thread, lots of data, let's keep it going. My numbers 1Y000404, build date 08/07 without TPMS. My understanding is a lot of the early cars do not have TPMS, it was introduced later. Is this another "marker"?

So there is a CLK BS out there painted in Designo Espresso????? I would like to see a picture of that. It is the 23rd car on the list provided to us by JDB. Anyone else know anything abou this or is it just a typo or mis rep.....??

That Designo listing came from a listing on the internet from AutoTrader.com.
The car was listed for sale on 03/02/09 for the asking price of $105,978.00 with 2.080 Miles on the odometer. The listing dealer was Mercedes-Benz of Boerne, Texas.
The car was listed as being a "Designo Espresso" color.
And, as we know, the internet, never lies . . .
The listing is supposed to only contain CLK63 Black Series Vehicles. If you see any that are something else, please let me know, so I can remove them.

You are right. Scott's CLK63 Black Series, I believe, is painted with special dull gloss silver, not one of the "Designo" colors. So I think it could be considered even more unique than a "Designo".
