CLK BS Question

Hello,

New to the forum. Have been a BMW enthusiast owning two E46 M3 and an E60 M5. Came across a BS on the freeway the other day and just loved the look.

I would be coming from an E46 that is really an OEM CSL (minus the CSL airbox) and wanted to know how well the BS handles. I'm sure in a straight line the thing is a beast but how does the car feel. Does it feel quick and nimble like an M3?

Appreciate any feedback

If you like the look, go find one and drive it.

I believe that you will be pleasantly surprised.

Coming from an M3 the BS will feel heavy. However, it does handle VERY well and is very precise. I think the biggest thing you would find is that the steering is not nearly as communicative as the M3, but, it does a very good job. The amount of mechanical grip in the BS is amazing and it really hides the weight of the car in the corners. I have a friend with an E46 M3 with a supercharger and lots of suspension upgrades, big Brembos etc and he can hang with me all day in the twisties - but, one good straightaway and I'm gone.
Take one for a spin if you can - I'm pretty sure you'll end up buying one if you truly are serious.

I used to own an E46 M3. The BS won't be as agile due to the increased curb weight. But the handling will be much better in corners compared to the M3, because of the BS's stiffer chassis and more sophisticated suspension components. Most noticeable will be the brakes, as the stock calipers and discs on the M3 are a weak point. Since the M3 lacks torque which the BS has plenty of, it will be a little more difficult to put the power down out of a turn. The M3 also suffers from massive understeer, which is absent in the BS, which tends to oversteer. Steering feel is second to none in the Black Series compared to all the cars I've ever owned. The BS has also independent oil coolers for engine, transmission, power steering and differential. The Black Series has a 40% locking diff, compared to the 25% in the E46.

It's not really a fair comparison, at least to a stock E46 M3. The only thing that I like better in the M3, is it's sequential gearbox.

BTW, I really liked my E46 M3. It was a great car, especially for the money!

Thanks for the reply guys . I'll have to go test drive one :-). The car I have now feels very light due to all the CSL mods. BTW I'm not a track junkie at all; more just spirited driving.

Looking forward to getting behind the wheel.

Now that I think about it, it was a great looking car as well. I love fender flares, what can I say . And the Eisenmann enhanced exhaust note at 8000 rpm was fantastic .

F*ck, I really miss that car

I too have owned a couple of M3's, the Black Series and E46 are two different animals, as other have already stated the M3 will feel a little more precise but Black Series is much more fun and LOTS faster on a track. If you like throttle oversteer you will love the Black Series. An E92 is a better comparison but the Black Series is even a tick quicker than the E92 on most tracks. Now factor in the more aggressive looks, the better exhaust note and the "limited exclusivity" of the Black Series and its a slam dunk.

I went from a HPF Stage 2 E46 M3 with full suspension to a stock black series. There's no comparison in terms of grip level, the BS destroys the M3. The only area where the M3 wins is fast transistions mostly because of the weight. It takes a lot more concentration and skill to do a tight AutoX course in a BS than a M3. The M3 is so easy at the limit that it's boring. You really need to be sharp on your reflexes to hurl the BS around, which is what makes it so much fun.

Let us know when you pick one up, you'll love it. Then make sure you tell a moderator to F off or getting into a flame war with somebody on the board then you will fit right in because if you have not already noticed all the cool kids with Black Series are currently on probation...and whatever you do don't but any wheels from 360 Forged.

...honestly what's the deal? 3 Black Series guys put on probation this past weekend, are the mods on the war path or what? Is it someone's "time of the month"?

LOL! Good to know. So far I really like white and it sounds like the cheapest mods are H&R spacers and removal of the charcoal filters (similar to what I did to the E60 M5).

Not sure about wheels but this white one with HRE look damn nice

LOL!
Anyone remotely connected to the Cowboys will be barred from attending, except for Jerry!
My remote connection is that I live less than 1 mile away from their Valley Ranch practice facility.

(Plus, my wife says no! You're a bad influence!)
