what is the cf piece within the rims? Is that a brake cooler like renntech is offering?

 

Yes. It's for cooling purposes. Very high quality cf even for parts that aren't visible to the eyes.

 

Actually the CLK BS had rims originally made in Italy as well before switching to US manufacturer. In fact a number of the CLK BS cars came with mismatching sets of wheels from Italy and US, the difference being a lip inside the barrel. There is an older thread on this issue.
