Whose driven the CLK BS and C Coupe BS back-to-back?

First of all I love both cars and thinking between the two it's hard to choose one.

Anyone here driven these cars back-to-back and comment on their similarities and differences?

scroll through this forum...there is at least one thread on point. Also, there is a video review (Speed channel i think?) that discusses them both too as they race both cars. You should be able to find a link to the video here too

I have both and CLK is more raw, no throttle blipping, great sound, less comforatble interior, slower transmission. C63BS sound a bit tougher at higher RPM, better interior, not quite as wild as the CLK to drive, doesnt feel as fast in stock form as CLK, more comfortable daily driver however.

How would you rate the handling? steering feel? braking?

The turning circles on both cars are enormous, and the C63 is worse the CLK. The CLK steeering felt pretty remarkable to me at speed, nothing wrong with the C63 but it doesnt make me marvel in any way. Dont have anythign usefult to say on the hadnling, find it hard to distinguish beteween the too - apart from previous comment on steering sharpness. I find the brakes on both to be very strong albeit the C63 are a little grabbier and require a little more pedal finesse. Externally i think the C63BS makes the CLK look a bit wimpy, C63 has a wider butt and head on looks superior in my view

See, that is the part that has me nervous...the transmission. I have made arrangements to possibly purchase one this weekend, and have never driven one, but am worried that the transmission will be slow like in my E63.

The transmission feels 90% like the old W211 E63's with no rev matched downshifts. The 1% difference would be upshifts where the CLK felt a little bit harder, and downshifts seems a little faster. I was spending a lot of time in my boss's 2007 E63 at the time, and yea, felt just as sluggish.

It drove me nuts when I first got my car (since I also had the C63 Sedan with the much improved rev match downshifting transmission), but really, you fail to notice after about a day. You're busy enjoying every other aspect of the car.

Both Maverick and I brought up the steering aggressiveness/sharpness, and that's the thing I miss most about the CLK BS. While not exactly desirable at most tracks, it's awesome on the street and makes it a little bit of a monster. It's something that the CBS has not been able to replicate exactly. Once I solve my garage situation, I'll most likely be picking up a used CLK BS again to go along with the CBS.

Well its using a gearbox and electronics from 2007 so it will look poor in comparison to cars being released today. its the lack of throttle blipping that i find mystifying...they put it in the regular C63 which was released shortly after the CLK BS but the 'hardcore" CLK BS doesnt get it? i find that strange.

The CLK BS probably uses the gearbox and software of the regular CLK63 AMG. For the throttle blipping they'd need to do the whole song/dance of testing the new software in a car which probably costs a lot due to procedures. For them not worth the trouble for just a few cars.

The Black Series concept has changed quite a bit since the 1st one (SLK BS, just 160(!) units sold), now they clearly spend more time and money on it then back then. But they probably hope to sell many more too.

The transmission is subjective and relative depending on how you're driving...

On the street there are eons between the CLK63 Black Series "driving experience" and the E63...The Black always has something going on even when cruising..from the road feel, sound and at times brutal performance..

I don't know of anyone who has exited a Black after a drive without a big ear to ear grin...

Well, I hope that you are all correct about the rest of the CLK63 Black Series being amazing (in spite of its transmission) because I am paying to have a full inspection done on one tomorrow, and if it passes I am going up Saturday to drive it, and hopefully bring it home.

The test drive will seal the deal. Guaranteed haha. It took me 2 corners to know that it's a special car. Please report back!

Mitch

You're making too much about the transmission...it may not have the features of a newer vehicle but nothing wrong with it..

Just listen to the sound when you turn the key...
Down shift it and let it coast in second or third gear and hear a great crackling exhaust note..
Punch the throttle from a slow roll and if it has the Corsa's watch as the tail comes almost into your view
It's not an E63 or C63.,you'll be so occupied with driving and trying to keep it planted that the last thing you'll think about is the auto box...
It's not for everyone, a handful and brutal, can get away from you... you have to respect it's capabilities...

Okay...I drove it yesterday. The manual shift mode sucks, but I did not care, because the rest of the car is epic. They are checking out an odd sound from the front tomorrow, and hopefully we can work a deal. This car is amazing. Nothing else like it on the road, and I have had Ferraris, Porsches, and lots of other "performance" cars.

I never use my car in Manual shift mode ... when I'm in a sporty mood, I select Sport mode, turn off traction control and pull it down to 5th gear ... then I just drive that H.A.M. ... the slush box knows when you are driving aggressively and it adapts rather quickly ... always in the right gear on exit. Of course it could be better if you wanted it as a serious track car, but for a civilian sport car, it's hard to beat.

Personally, I think throttle blipping is overrated for a slush box (I had a Stradale with the ultimate throttle blipping)
