Backseat Aftermarket Option

I've been looking into getting a BS for the last several months. I noticed a white one that was for sale in Chicago a few months ago that had an aftermarket backseat option added. I have four little kids and the reason for selling my current car is to accommodate more people (compromise with the wife). Is this option still something that can be done or has the shipped sailed on making this mod on a going forward basis?

Kircherer was the manufacturer of the aftermarket back seat. Not sure if they still offer it or if others make a similar version. In any event the real issue is the ingress/egress to the rear area. The front seat backs don't move much and you have to manually slide the seat forward to have any room which is still not much. So besides the difficulty of getting anyone in and out of the back on a regular basis, anybody you put back their is virtually trapped without a third party to help them out unless they can squeeze between the front seats. Something to think about in case of an accident. There is also a weight limit of about 180lbs in the rear to consider.

Thanks, that information is very helpful. Well the initial use would be primarily to throw a couple of my kids in the backseat, you raise a good point about ingress and egress in case of an accident that I was unaware of. Not to mention, kids grow bigger and I'm sure at some point in the near future I'll be pushing the 180 pound limit - especially considering that most of my kids will be pretty tall if they follow after me (6'7"). The other option I was looking at was a Maserati Gran Turismo but I'd much prefer a BS if I can make it work.

This is not a car for you if you have several kids. Honestly you could buy the BS and get a cheap sedan for when you need to drive the kids...

I have three kids and while my BS is not my daily driver, if I ever want to drive the car chances are I will have a kid with me. So I decided to throw in an oem clk back seat and moved the battery to the spare tire location.

Everything fits like factory and its completely 100% reversible. The ingress / egress is a bit of a pain though. The kids can only enter from passenger side and
I leave the front passenger seat all the way up and forward so they can enter and exit.

Thanks for the input. I have a daily driver sedan so the rear seat option is more of a compromise so that I could take the kids on drives with the local car club and avoid the fighting that the NSX creates with only one spare seat.

Whoadude - would love more details on how you accomplished the OEM conversion? What was the cost? Did you DIY or have someone do it for you?

This topic has been debated to death so you should search the threads.

I am truly not trying to beat you up on this but you want to put your most valuable asset into a car not made to have a back seat. Explain to you wife how you got into an accident and the kids could not get out and the worst happened to them...seriously. Get a audi S6 TT if you want a fast/refined four dore.

ecampbell - I hear your point loud and clear (and have read many of the threads) although after owning a couple Audi's I'm not sure I want to go that direction again. I am looking at a few options but the BS is still my preference even though its maybe not the most practical option. Admittedly though, the only time I am thinking "practical" when it comes to cars is when I'm shopping for the next true family hauler :-). Regardless, any sense of urgency has disappeared as shortly after starting this thread I ended up having surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon. If I move on a BS, I'll pipe up some more. Thanks, again for all the input.

I got one for you....I just bought a 2016 S6 4.0TT. It is four door and gives my BS (when it was stock) a run for its money. Either way you can't go wrong with German engineering but please, do not modify a car and say your going to put your kids in it...mother-in-law ok...

Pics here, oem clk back seats bolt right in. Battery relocated to the trunk. 100% reversible.

^^ thats exactly what I did, $400 for seats that looked brand new and I bought all the appropriate bolts from MB.

Fits perfect, looks way better than the seat deletes and I also put the battery in the trunk. I did buy the MB CLK car seat adapter and also throw a car seat in at times. We do have a SUV and other sedan for daily duties, but it is nice to have the option every now and then.

All up $600 in the whole deal and it took me maybe 2 hours to do all the work, including battery relocation. I still have all the OEM parts and can reinstall just as easy as putting this in.

I did mine change a while ago so no idea what bolts where needed, but I just bought a complete backseat assembly of ebay.

Once I had that at home, I pulled out the factory set up and placed everything in the car and figured out what parts I needed to bolt everything in place. From there it was a trip to Mercedes and looking at a diagram of the seats on a CLK 350 I told the parts guy what I needed. Next day I had everything. Cost around $100.

I drove the white CLK63 Black Series that was in Chicago and had the rear seats in it. The parts were OEM, and fit perfectly. Surprisingly getting in and out of the back seats was not as hard for me to do as I anticipated (I am 6 feet tall, and around 190 lbs).

My daughter is 7 years old, and loves riding in our cars, but the CLK63 Black Series and NSX have nowhere for her to sit, so I was considering getting that white car for the rear seats. I have heard both sides of the 'safety' angle, and it seems to be who you feel like listening to at the time.

Good luck in your research.
