Fume from gas (anyone done the recommended 15yr fuel pump replacement?)

didn't think it'd happen, but it just started, so I figure I'd get this taken care of as soon as possible; can anyone that has fixed the issue briefly walk me through the necessary parts/labor?

just so I know what I'm talking about when I bring the car in for the service appointment, thanks in advance fellas!

Is it only happening at top off? Or you can smell it when half empty?

In my ML63, the fuel filter (left-side unit) developed a hairline crack in the top hat. It was leaking fumes all the time.

You're spot-on, so I took the car out this past weekend and after around 20mi of driving (1/8 tank), came home, parked, woke up the next day, I did not smell any more gas fume in the garage.

And yes, the smell came on right after I took the car out to top off the gas (and my mistake, to round it up to the nearest dollar), won't be making that mistake again LOL

But I'll still look into it the next time I take the car in for a routine maintenance, even though this car only has about 18k miles on the odo.

oh geez, did the filter fixed the issue without changing the fuel pump?

mine went away after driving it, I shouldn't have forced more gas in the tank to the nearest dollar, bad habit.

the smell/leak will be in driver side rear wheel well. remove wheel, liner, and you can inspect the fuel line and clamp. i had same problem by topping off, now at first click when filling - i stop

Yes, a new filter unit fixed the problem. However, depending on the fuel tank setup - hose routing, you might need to remove the fuel pump to disconnect the hoses connecting to the filter. (Not sure about the W209/BS setup).

i also wonder if its a gasket /o ring? and if its in the same location behind the rear 'seat' did you resolved this?

example: Senior Leigh FIX Gas Leak When Fill Up

Interesting look at my fuel cover. Won't be able to fuel to the top to take a look where it's leaking till it's warmer for me here but it looks like (bottom of pic) is where the fuel is sloshing back as i drive and filling around there

Fuel pump replacement

[QUOTE=duuder;8566092]i also wonder if its a gasket /o ring? and if its in the same location behind the rear 'seat' did you resolved this?

I had to replace my fuel pump last year after the seal failed (fuel was visibly pooling on top of the pump). The car and my garage smelled very heavily of gas odors when it did. The local Mercedes shop here is also an AMG dealership and replaced it and the fuel sender for $ 1164.00. Both entry points/sides (behind the driver side and passenger sides) needed to be opened up for the repair and then also have both seals to the metal access caps replaced (they are intended for one time use only). No more fuel odors after the repair. Apparently, the fuel pump seals fail in time, thus the 15-year recommended replacement.

i replaced the fuel pump sender friday, its DIY if you have a few hours to spare. in many cases, its not the seal but the plastic housing that gets crack due to age/overfilling/over-pressurized.

updated part # for sender and adapter:
sender - 209-470-22-94
updated adapter harness - 211-440-05-07
pump seal - 019-997-23-45-64
sender seal -
211-471-05-79-64

will require new seals for both sender location and pump, i used this video from FCP as reference:
