Resonator Delete

Resonator Delete
After viewing some threads in the CLS63 section, I decided to try a resonator delete on my 2012 CLS550 4Matic. The consensus there (after a couple different variations were tried) was to use straight pipes instead of an x-pipe... the straight pipes would yield a deeper sound with no problems. With that in mind, I recently had the resonator cut off at a custom muffler shop and they welded two straight stainless pipes in its place (estimates were $150-200).
To me, this simple mod was a perfect solution to my exhaust needs. The sound on start-up is slightly louder and the cabin (with windows closed) has a nice 'rumble' during acceleration. At a steady cruise, there is really no noticeable difference from the stock setup... and I've never yet experienced any dreaded drone.
The quality of my sound file is the best I can do under the circumstances. You will hear a cold start, some idle and a few revs... edited to a total of 30-seconds (in MP3 format). I hope this will assist some members in their exhaust decision... I honestly feel no need to go any louder. At the least, this may be a starting point.

Sounds good, Mahalo(thanks) for making that btw.
It almost sounds like an AMG model from the revs. The 550's seem to have a lower tone than the 63's, though its probably the muffler. This may just be an avenue to take for me based upon that clip. I've been following the posts on the CLS63 forum, ie straight through vs x/h, but didn't know what the outcome would be on our models.

I'm glad there are some positive reviews... thanx for your feedback. Initially, I was a little concerned this might have been a waste of time and money, so I made sure the resonator was cut off in such a way that it could be replaced (if so needed). Luckily, I'm thrilled with the results... just enough to get your attention during acceleration, but docile during cruising speeds.

That's something Ive been thinking about just as an option to go back to stock. Did you have them flange it or straight cut it?

I left that decision to the professionals... it appears to be a straight cut. I explained my concerns to the shop and they assured me the resonator could be replaced (for a similar price).

Good deal, depending on my end result you may have saved me close to 4grand in the end. I'll be sure to post my end results. You ever get to the islands I owe you a beer or two. Mahalo

Thank for the tip 427: went out to the muffler shop, 45 minutes later and $100 bucks poorer, the result is great. Just enough low end growl to make a difference not very intrusive nor harsh.

Has anyone else tried this... either good or bad results to report?

A lot of nice info on the thread. I have a meeting with my local muffler shop tomorrow to remove the resonator on my `12 CLS 550. Will be going with straight pipes vs. X-pipe.
I think someone in the string had a question on implications on removing the resonator should you have a lease. My dealer service team said that as long as you can put it back on prior to lease end your fine.
Will share pictures of the job post completion and also post before and after exhaust sound bytes.

I made an appointment with my local muffler shop. Will report back to you guys.
thanks!
427- you recorded it outside the cabin right? If inside, that noise will sure give me headache.

OOOOPS!
I would like to apologize to the AMG Sound Police for transgressing the unwritten law. I had absolutely no idea you had a copyright in automotive fun and respectfully genuflect in your presence. As a form of self inflicted punishment, I pledge to immediately have the resonator restored and permanently deactivate one of the turbochargers on my lowly CLS550.
Mea culpa,
427

Sorry I haven’t responded earlier, my old DSL connection has been problematic and Verizon support has been even worse.

As for the suspension drop, it would be an easier decision if I didn’t live in the wicked northeast. I want to observe how much clearance I need in the 4Matic for snow and crater sized potholes before making the change.
