Howe does your car ride on the highway?

I just picked up my 2012 with 64,000kms on it and am noticing it doesn't drive very smoothly on the highway, around 80mph or 130kph. the best i can describe it is it feels like a rumbling/shaky feeling, and get a humming sound. Steering is fine, no shaking there. It gets worse or louder when i increase the speed, i pushed it to 125mph or 200kph today to check it out.

Anyone else have this, is it normal? Thought id check before I bring it in to the dealer.

Had a '12 for 4 years and now have a '15. Other than the occasional wheel balance problem, both ride like they're on rails on the highway. There must be something wrong.

At 80mph, my CLS feels like it is doing half of that speed, smooth as can be. There is definitely something not right about your car.

I mean the car drives straight but definitely feels like something is out of balance. Thanks, i will bring it in to have it looked at.

Do you have spacers on the wheels?

No, just the factory 19" wheels right now.

I'm wondering if one of the rims is bent or if the tires are defective....

If the front rims are bent or the front tires are out of balance, you should feel it in the steering wheel, unless its a bent rim or out of balance tire in the rear. Have someone sit in the back and see if there is any shaking in the rear.

Have all 4 wheels/tires checked for concentricity and run-out. Concentricity means that the wheel/tire combination is perfectly round, not egg-shaped. Run-out checks to be sure that the wheel or tire does not wobble from side to side. Road hazards and tire wear can cause either or both. A good mechanic can ride in a car and tell you which he suspects, but must confirm it with the wheel off the car. If the defect is on a rear wheel, you may not feel it in the steering wheel, but probably in the seat of your pants.

There is a chance that the problem is related to a brake or wheel bearing or axle, but I have always found it best to check the simple (less expensive) things first.

Nothing coming out of the steering wheel, so must be from the the rear, def feel it in the body more than anything. I also get a pulsing on the brakes, steering wheel gets shaky, so maybe the brakes are part of the problem as you mentioned.

I'll have them look at both. The car is pre-owned so just starting to fidn these things now. Good thing is I still have another month and a half of factory warranty, and 30 days warranty from the dealer I purchased the car from.

2012 CLS550 4Matic
My 2012 CLS550 4Matic does this too. I bought mine with only 26k miles. It does NOT ride like how a Mercedes should. I have lots of experience with my other car when it comes to vibrations and shakes but the CLS I'm not yet sure about.

On the CLS, my steering does not shake whether braking or not. But as the OP states, it's like a rough feel or very slight grinding sound or feel. Seems to be coming from front of car. Miles are too low to be a wheel bearing imho. I'm thinking tires or a wheel issue. We'll see.

I'll report back after I have it checked.
