choose between low mile 2014 and high mile 2015

I used to have a 2010 E550. I'm in a 2013 ML350 BT - it's a comfy, quiet ride with lots of utility, but I miss the fun of driving.

I recently test-drove a 2014 CLS550 for the first time - I had previously thought the CLS was an E with different styling. I was pleasantly surprised that it's a bit more sporty than the E. The CLS seems to be the right mix of comfort and sport that I'm looking for.

Locally, there's a 2014 with 24k miles and a 2015 with 60k miles - at the same price, same options. It's not really high-mile, just high-miles for it being only 2-yrs old.

My preference is the 2015 for its interior styling, updated Nav hardware, and additional safety features. What I'm wondering about is the mileage. (I'm thinking the owner commuted 120 miles daily for 2 years)

I would drive approx 15k miles per year.

I would get the MB extended warranty on either. What's the drawback of a 60k miles 2-year old CLS? What's wearing and going to need replacement? Rotors, anything else?

thanks

Are the datacards both the same?

So the 2014 was driven 8,000 miles per year, while the 2015 was driven 30,000 miles per year. First thing to do is carefully inspect the maintenance records on both cars to make sure the previous owners at least did the minimum required maintenance as required. Some people park their cars in the garage and do the absolute minimum or skip on some items altogether. Others will drive their cars hard, but do everything and more to keep their cars running perfectly. So mileage alone isn't necessarily an indication of how the car was cared for by its previous owner. Not unique to MB as I've seen this of owners of various luxury brand vehicles.

Since you have no way of knowing how well or how bad the previous owner of each car treated the vehicle, you should also have the vehicle you're interested in independently inspected. That will help you identify at least some of the items that might need repair / replacement soon.

Lots of folks have posted about the 2014 having some issues with brake wear / vibration, so you might want to review the forum for those posts. The dealerships seem to have always replaced the associated parts under warranty. Like any other vehicle, no matter what brand you buy, things break or wear out. So again, do an independent inspection on the car before you buy it, so you have a good idea of any near-term issues you may be looking at. Best of luck to you.

thanks for that. They are both CPO cars being sold by a MB dealership - I'll be able to get maintenance history.
Interesting about the 2014 vibration/brake problem - I'll search for those posts. That 2014 had a vibration problem - I could see the steering wheel vibration while on the highway, and could really feel it when braking. I let them know after the test-drive.

I don't think that the CPO coverage includes rotors/pads. Whereas the 2014 new car warranty should cover the repair. Good Luck.

I like the 2015 styling better too but 30k miles a year is a lot of miles. How many miles do you think these engines are good for? The C400 and the C550?

Amen to that. I have a 2014 E550 cabrio. Brakes shuddered and vibrated at 15,000 miles and all four wheels were replaced under warranty (even though brake warranty is 12k miles). At 30,000 miles the shudder demon returned. This time the dealer said "Tough". "$1,300 for the fronts". Elsewhere on this forum I found a great resource for replacement rotors and discs. So, the lesson here is that on the '14, be prepared to replace discs and rotors (if OEM) every 15,000 miles.

Mileage isn't an issue on a car that was maintained. I regularly see 100k mile cars with no leaks and in excellent shape, and I see cars with 30k that have never been serviced and are disgusting because the owner didn't care. I'd avoid a car like that regardless of how low the miles are.

It depends on the actual condition of the actual cars in question. If they are basically equal and you like the newer cars styling, don't worry about the mileage, and drive and enjoy the car you like best.
