CLS400 Performance mufflers?

Hi guys,

I just did a resonator and muffler delete to my 2016 CLS400. It sounds amazing; but after driving it for a weekend, I felt like it's too loud sometimes.

I am thinking of getting performance mufflers to make the sound less annoying and better, anybody have recommendations on good mufflers for a CLS400?

I just got here. I don’t know but renntech and Amg mufflers may be the way to do it. Wasn’t going to respond because I’m not an expert but figured it might be useful.

AMG muffler's a good idea.. not sure about renntech tho it's too expensive I think.

Regi,

Just a thought, do you still have your OE mufflers? If so, put them back on and see how they sound without the resonators. Are you able to pass emissions testing in CA with these mods? Marv

Yes I do, keeping all OE parts just in case I want to sell the car later on. A lot of people in this forum say that CLS mufflers tend to make your car very quiet.. and there's two of them mufflers, pretty big ones too as you can see from the picture...

Tomorrow, I'm going to the exhaust shop and see what they recommend; I was thinking Borla mufflers since they are decently priced. I'll share a video once new mufflers are attached.

In the case of CA emissions; I'm not sure hahaha. the car is a 2016 so I'm sure they don't require an emission test for my car (?)

Question for you, did doing that mod throw any codes?

To me, it looks like you're running straight pipes. No resonators, no cat convertors, no mufflers. There is no way you will pass emission testing when your car needs it. I believe you (in CA) are exempt for 5 years (next year). I bet you get a lot of drone at highway speeds. Marv

Yep it is a straight pipe hahaha and yes I am still exempt from emission tests.

Personally, I think the droning is no problem for me; it's not that much anyway. Maybe it's worst being a passenger at the back.

Laugh now, but next year you will need to pass emissions! That's after the money you poured down the drain! Hope you like your fart can sound!

You still have primary cats intact...should be okay with smog. Secondary cats are just hollow cans just like a resonator to muffle down more sound. Maybe AMG mufflers be better? I'm not sure. I also removed resonator and both mufflers, primary and secondary cats still there. There is a slight drone on the freeway, but with light music, it's gone. I love the sound when I do some pulls...light or hard. I also have the EC tune.

If you remove primary cats, then you won't pass smog. I'm thinking about cat-less downpipes sometime in the winter time. Still keeping all the original parts and the cats will be easily swappable within 30 minutes in case of smog testing. I've talked to a shop already. Charging 1k for entire exhaust work.

If you're thinking about just RennTech sport mufflers, I rather recommend that you go for a full exhaust by pitching in another 1k or so. Those exhaust will give you no drone while all the sound you want. Yes, they are expensive. And I wouldn't buy $2500 mufflers from RT either.

Just added an x-pipe and new mufflers; the sound is a lot less loud and deeper now. But I feel like now I can actually feel the droning. So I might need to change the mufflers or completely remove them. See:

Yes! I'm still looking in the market for AMG mufflers so we'll see. Do you think putting back in a secondary cat for me would help with droning, or it doesn't matter?

Per their name, resonator(s) are designed to reduce/eliminate the resonance. "resonance is the tendency of a system to vibrate with increasing amplitudes at some frequencies of excitation. These are known as the system's resonant frequencies (or resonance frequencies). The resonator may have a fundamental frequency and any number of harmonics."

If you want to reduce the drone (resonance) then reinstall either the stock resonator or after market units. A good resonator will introduce very little back pressure.

Thanks! I'll try to do that. I'll probably remove the aftermarket mufflers and add back the resonator (either the stock one or aftermarket ones). I'll share a video later!

I doubt the secondary cats have much to do with the drone sound. I wouldn't spend any cash on aftermarket mufflers. That's just me Resonator could be your solution if it's toooo loud or getting a bit of too much drone. Maybe check with a tuning shop if they can provide you with a solution? Or they might offer you a aftermarket resonator or whatever that might help you. Don't just go out buying all these parts lol Check with a shop and see what they recommend and speculate on that and other options that you might be open to

Yes, I was busy I forgot to update the forum lol. Basically last week, I removed the mufflers and kept the x-pipe. Now the sound is perfect (for me at least)! lots of rumbling, especially at low RPM, then there's very minimal -- almost non-existent droning, and the sound is not annoying anymore! I think by adding the x-pipe made the sound just a bit less loud but a lot better, Here are some pictures:

Very nice. Thank you for the update

I am looking to just go with a resonator delete and if that’s doesn’t do the trick for me, I’ll do Borla XS. A buddy of mine suggested it. He’s a huge Audi guy and deals with 3.0 T, so hopefully it’ll be ok.

but I’m looking forward to your video brotha

btw are you in Cali by chance?

Let me know how that goes, especially if you actually put a Borla XS in! I'd recommend an x-pipe too though.

Yeah man, I am in Los Angeles!

Nice! I’m up in Sacramento. Loving the 400, decent power but silent.

Before I get any exhaust work done I’m getting a full front clear bra. It’s expensive but worth it. I plan to keep this one long term. Even though I don’t drive far daily, with my luck one trip on the highway I’ll get a rock chip. Lol

I have the resonators deleted with OEM mufflers and I’m happy with that. No drone at all and much deeper sound
