Has anyone done it? I've seen people here getting it installed for like $150-$200. Where I'm at, it's $400 with taxes, and it's $190 for the part itself. If I were to buy the part off the Mercedes-Benz website, I'd be saving half.
Pretty sure I've figured it out, waiting on the activator module to come in, once it works out I'll make a thorough and easy thread to follow on how to install Apple CarPlay.
I got this procedure done by Mercedes (without the parts you shared)... The parts are nothing but a port signifying that *this* is a smartphone port out of the two... Dealer insisted that I should get that installed, I requested him to just do the software upgrade and enable Apple Play, if it does not work I will go ahead and get that part as well...
It worked without the parts and costed me about 225...

I know it's an old thread, but by any chances do you still have the MB docs so I could show to my dealership? The first person who helped me said it's not available, it's factory done only.

What the other person said, don't get the part. All it is is a new USB port where port #2 (the CarPlay port) has a tablet like design. That's all there is to it. Waste of $100+. Just tell them to update the COMAND software.
So far I've ran into people that don't know what I'm talking about... I am not surprised, because I was thinking about the number of times a dealership has to do that overall. But to claim that it's not possible to do it - that's another story. I'll work with my service adviser and keep you updated

Try a different dealer. Where I live, there's 6 dealers within about a 40km radius. Two of them said it's possible, one of them backed out.

I have a 2015 CLS 550 thats currently at the dealership. After a lot of poking and prodding they agreed to do the software updates. They're telling me its not working.
I called the San Antonio MB dealership and they found your record for the install. But it doesnt have any of the details of what the techs actually did.
Do you have any information that might be illuminating? I appreciate it!

They do tell you to install a new USB port but that’s useless as the only thing it changes is for the #2 USB port, it has a tablet sign. Are you sure they’re to use an iPhone with a lighting cable on usb #2 and not 1?
Because if they have the cable in the first usb, carplay won’t work. If that doesn’t work, then the dealer I got it done was at Mercedes Benz Surrey, and the service manager’s name was Raul. I would give them a call and let them know you’re from Texas, and the dealers have no clue on how to install it.
So after asking them about the firmware update / upgrade (that's what basically is), the dealer had to do some research. They quoted me almost $800 - the new USB port and 3 hours of labor @ $210/hour...

I did the USB myself, it's on YouTube it's super easy. I believe it was you had to poke in two parts to get the old USB slot out, then connect the new one and pop it in. I would try to ask other dealers in your area.
I'm confused now, did you need to do the hardware install or is it unnecessary? ;-)
One person said they updated the software and he told them not to do the hardware upgrade and it worked. I also believe you don't need to do the hardware upgrade.
Just updating you. My car is a 2015 CLS 400 and I had carplay installed. 2015 is the last model u can install CarPlay from dealer but only for certain months of the car's production. Cost me $500 for it and its only wired carplay (not wireless). U DO NOT NEED THE HARDWARE USB PORT. Waste of money, plug in is on passenger side port.
I’m pretty desperate. I’m trying to have this CarPlay firmware update added to my mother’s CLS with. NTG 5.5 , I have the dealer the service bulletin pdf and they are refusing to install the firmware without also swapping out the hardware in the center armrest.
I’ve seen enough evidence to believe this doesn’t have to be done the way the dealer wants to do it. If anyone is willing to share the dealership and service advisor or manager they dealt with that is still employed with the Mercedes Dealer I will definitely make it worth your while and compensate you for your tip. They have had her car for 4 days or a 1 hour firmware update.
I’m just thinking if they heard it from another MB dealers mouth they would believe them over me and go ahead and install the for firmware and be done.
Update: after dealing with local dealer who was reluctant and not willing to do the firmware update without forcibly installing the smartphone integration kit sold by the dealer. I decided to try out the services provided by known Benz coding specialists Benz Ninja who rented me his Xentry laptop via FedEx expedition, we coded my C218 with CarPlay and also upgraded my C218 headlight to the euro software that allows for better more intelligent light performance during night driving. Everything worked out well, the CarPlay worked instantly after he coded my C218 remotely and I didn’t have to install any hardware whatsoever. All in all I was looking at paying my dealer $300+ for something they could do in literally 10 mins and I paid Benz Ninja about double that for coding modifications to multiple Benz’s in my family’s fleet.
