Front end suspension issue

Hello all,

I have a 2013 cls550 4matic with around 80k miles. I have been having some issue with the front end suspension. I hear clunking noise when I hit bumps, and some instability while breaking and sometimes just while driving, worse with high speeds.

1 year ago I had a strut bushing replaced for similar issue on the passenger side. The resulted in a fix of the problem. (When I brought my car to a different shop last week the guy told me the previous place didn’t do anything at all, maybe just a temporary fix on the old bushing)

last week I had the forward arm bushings and sway bar links replaced on both sides.

Since I got it fixed the last time, there is NO change in the problem. I have no idea of what it can be. It’s killing me. The guy told me the shaking was likely from my wheels being bent, I spent 300 to fix the four without any obvious bends. Then I had one tire with 6mm less thread so they said it could be that. Changed the tire. Still having the issue.

This is killing me. I just need the car fixed.

does anyone know what the possible
problem is? Also, can anyone recommend a good Mercedes mechanic in Queens?

@tp16306 You have options.

- do more diagnosis and post your findings here. Your description does not narrow down the root cause.
- start replacing items one by one until you find a solution. With a vehicle behaving as you describe, it sounds like there is considerable maintenance required.
- take it to a shop and tell them to "fix it". This is probably the most expensive option.

What does instability mean? Use more words.

Leading candidates in my view:
- upper strut mount
- strut (shock)
- front lower control arm bushings
- stabilizer bar bushings
- lower ball joint
- upper ball joint
- tie rod outer joint
- tie rod inner joint
- steering rack bushings
- tires damaged
- wheels damaged
- wheels out of balance

You need to get to a known good state. It doesn't sounds like you're there, so you need more diagnostic work.

Upper strut mount caused me issues a few times when otherwise stuff felt tight.

Your issue is your front struts are gone. The bags may be good but the seal holding the gas inside the tube is gone inside and bottoming out in the strut tower. I had the same issue. Drove me nuts. I had an extended warranty and it happened while I was waiting for the waiting period to be up. The warranty company didn’t want to fix it and Mercedes said they couldn’t hear the noise. I took it to my mechanic and I had him call the warranty company and made them send someone out for the 3rd time. They finally said it was the drivers front and replaced it. The noise was still there except not on the drivers side any longer but now on the passenger side. I told them it was both but they wouldn’t listen. I finally said screw it, I bought the strut at dealer cost myself and had my mechanic change it out. Once he got the strut out, you could see the oil had soaked the top of the strut and I took pictures and sent them to the head of the warranty company and said if they didn’t pay, I would file a complaint with the FTC. Once they saw the strut with the oil on top, they paid me back for the strut. Haven’t heard a peep out of the front end until today. My stabilizer bar bushings have dried out and now scrunch over speed bumps or anything that makes my suspension bounce. I only have 40k miles on my 2014. Trust me, it’s your issue. I had Arnott replace 4 sets of front struts on an 07 XJR and it wasn’t until I bought the factory units that the noise finally stopped. I found out Arnott only fixed the bags not the seals in the struts themselves. Mercedes only sells remanufactured units but the ones from the factory are completely rebuilt from Monroe with new pistons and seals. Replace them and your problem will be solved.

My 2016 CLS550 RWD is making horrible front end noise and I'm worried that it may be the front air struts have failed. I've only owned the car for 38 days so I'm really stressed over this. I'm looking to see if I can find a extended warranty company that will cover a repair like that, but I'm not feeling very hopeful.
