Why is this model called a Coupe?

Its a four door car, so why is this model classified as a coupe? If this is a really stupid question then I am sorry, but I want to know why...

Don't ask me ask Jeaves.
The new CLS-Class four-door Coupe is based on a unique vehicle concept which for the first time combines the elegance and dynamism of a coupe with the comfort and practicality of a saloon.
Marketing hype although imho with the lines this car has, it is not hard to imagine this car as a two door.

...maybe there is a marketing-part, but I am a little bit surprised that nobody knows what the word "coupé" means...

Coupé means "An own cabin/compartment for every passenger"...So it means, one seat for every passenger. The CLS has 4 passenger-seats (it´s a 4-seater), so it´s correct to call it "coupé"...I hope you could understand this, because my English went bad the last years. -.-

Sure, it sounds better to call it a coupé than a sedan...

Yes, its a marketing thing.
However, where did you get your definition from? If it was referring to automobiles a school bus would also be a coupe. Which it is definetly not. It is wrong and so are you.
Merriam Webster defines a coupe as a 2-door automobile and no one needed a dictionary to tell them that. I applaud Mercedes for taking styling risks with this car and I boo them for their foolishness. I also admonish this website for carrying on their stupidity.

Coupé means, One Cabin for each passenger...The CLS has four single-Seats...So, there´s ONE "cabin" for each passenger...
it´s NOT correct, that every coupé MUST have only two doors...THIS is stupid. So are you?

Who the f*** is Merriam Webster? I think she´s not french?

SL-500 (mine), Ferrari Spider convertible (was Husbands, mine now!)
Whats all the fuss over the semantics of a word.
If you want to get picky then the origin of coupe refered to a horse drawn carriage....is that what you want to drive???

"[Mid-19th century. From French (carrosse) coupé , literally “cut-down (carriage)” (because it was smaller than earlier models) "

"A four-wheeled close carriage for two persons inside, with an outside seat for the driver; -- so called because giving the appearance of a larger carriage cut off."

"four-wheeled closed horse-drawn carriage for two persons inside with an outside seat for the driver in front"

"transport two-seater carriage: a closed four-wheeled carriage that has two inside seats for passengers and a driver’s seat outside in the front"

"a car with a fixed roof, two doors, two or four seats, and usually a sloping back"

"A closed car with two side doors and less than 33 cubic feet of rear interior volume, according to measurements based on SAE standard J1100. A two-door car is therefore not necessarily a coupe."

This matters a lot................................. I don't think

Still, entertaining nonetheless

And bjoern1980 - congrats on your English. There are people I know who were born in the UK who can't speak as well as you!!

I think it is a sedan. It is just another sedan between E-class and S-class. Roof line couldn't be an indication to tell whether it is a coupe or sedan, but the number of doors could.
