tire pressure monitor reset?

i just put my 20" wheels on and as soon as i got on the highway, the tire pressure indicator went off. i checked the tire pressure later on and everything seemed fine. i'm assuming this is because of the size change. how can i reset the setting so it adapts the current setting as standard? TIA.

man, that happened to me 2 days ago, but ive had my 20s on for 3 weeks now, and it just happened a couple days ago. u reset it via one of the sub menus on the dash. i havent checked pressure yet, so not sure if its a false alarm. i thought they had sensors hung off the valve stems inside the tire for stock wheels, maybe not, i wonder how it senses the tire pressure change???

my m3 had a level sensor which you could re-calibrate whenever you got new wheels/tires. a 20% change in the level would throw off the sensor.

Let me share my recent experience (yesterday) with you guys. I was in the highway and suddenly my warning light came on in the dash and told me "Tire Pressure Low Check tire pressure!" Then I think "are you sure?" I need to fill my gas anyway therefore I pulled in the gas station and checked. As soon as I check the tire pressure, I found out one of my tire pressure in on of my rear tire only got 22 psi suppose to be 36psi. Then I looked around and I found there is a nail there! Of course the next thing is I head to the nearest tire center. When I arrived at the tire shop, the manager came out said "Oh nice car....." and I told him I need to patch a tire and he told me $50. I said "Did you say $50 bucks to patch a tire!" then he said yup............ but one thing he told me that and make me feel comfortable is if he scratched my wheel, he will replace it for free. Of course I got no choice and let him to do a $50 patch. When he removed the tire, I told him to look for the sensor and we both can't find any sensor! Anyway, I felt good after he finished and head back to the highway not even 10 mins later then the dash displayed again "Tire Pressure Low Check tire pressure!" then I think please another nail!!! Then I use my gauage to measure all four tires and I do not see any problem so far. But for the pass 2 days, when I turn off the car and back on it just give me this same warning light... What 's up with this? My question is how can I reset the tire pressure system in my car? Second question is where is the sensor? in the wheel, tire or? Anyway I can't stand with that warning light and I will head to the dealer soon and figured this out.

thanks,
hlkc

as it turns out, the tire pressure in my right rear wheel was low as well. i filled it back and it has been fine since, but i too do not know how to reset the error. it says to hold the reset button for 3 seconds...where is the reset button???

i'm sure we can find this in our manuals, but i'm too lazy to look.

should be the clock / trip reset knob/button - same one you use to dim your instrument cluster. My E had one - I think the CLS does too.

No, you need to go to the sub menu there for you to reset the tire pressure. It is the one either outside temperature or speed depending on your setting. While you are on the display, press the down menu, not minus or down arrow then it will get to the question something like "Is it the correct tire pressure?" then you will use "+" to confirm your setting.

Thanks,

When he removed the tire, I told him to look for the sensor and we both can't find any sensor!
The reason there is no sensor is that the system in your car only uses the ESP control unit to monitor the wheelspeeds of each wheel for minor differences. Tire inflation determines the size of the tire, thus the difference in wheelspeeds.

But for the pass 2 days, when I turn off the car and back on it just give me this same warning light... What 's up with this?
You must reset the system after you get a warning. But only after you correct the tire pressure, as you did. That's why the menu on the screen says "Tire Pressure Now OK?"

This system has a lot of limitations, mainly for cost reasons. The system on the S, CL, SL has sensors in each tire, so that you can see what the current pressure is. However, with the system in your car, you will only hear from it when there is a problem.

I hope all of that makes sense!

Mike

Mike- thanks for the info!! its not such a bad thing for us with after market wheels since it saves us the hassle of pulling the existing sensors, or puchasing new ones. it would be nice to know pressure at all times, but knowing just when its low is good enough.

thanks again

As mentioned in the prior post, the S-Class does indeed come with TPMS on each wheel, with continuous pressure readings for each wheel. With Mercedes suggesting different pressure in the front as opposed to the rear, it's nice to be able to check and recheck without leaving the car.

Two interesting items:

I recently had the dealer convert my tires over to nitrogen filled. Besides the benefit of less moisture issues with the wheels, I notice much less disparity between hot and cold weather driving pressure readings.

If you have ever had the "fun" of re-setting the system in the car, after a tire change or flat repair, be sure you don't add to the problem by having additional "Beru valve" sensors in your vehicle. If you are carrying mounted sensored wheels in your trunk for example, the TPMS system will attempt to read the pressure of the additional tires.

.

That's awesome! I need to check and see if anyone here in SoCal has that capability yet. Talk about Formula 1 technology for the street, they have been doing that for years, specifically for the reason you mentioned. Hot or cold, the pressure stays constant.

Not sure but I heard Costco is filling nitrogen now.

Cheers,

So let me get this straight our 06 CLS500 does not have any tpms or any device inside the wheel? I am upgrading to 20" aftermarket rims and was trying to find the correct tpms for my car, now I read it is not necessary because no tpms is required?

Sounds like either a sensor or electronics glitch. Forget the dealer’s designer air for your tires, its a rip off. A portable air compressor is your best friend, I use this one, has a auto shutoff.
