Guy comes on dissing our beloved CLS and you think he deserves some respect?...help me here I'm a bit dense.
Imho that is just some pent up frustration coming out. I acted the same way with a prior Bimmer experience. Very heated battles. Said some things to this day I regret. Overall the car was a good car but the particular one I bought was a POS. 8 trips to the dealer in 2 months. Something's not right. A POS example yes. All CLS' crap. I don't think so.

Dude:

I live/work/breathe NY and mine is the only one I've ever seen. Again, count the number of BMW 645's compared to CLS AMG's...the ratios are about 25:1. Also, talk to the Tri-State MB dealers (I know all, if not most of them) and ask how many they have in inventory and how many they've sold. Answer?: not many at all and if you spread that number of cars across the 5 boroughs and 1000's of cars out there on the road, you will find very few indeed (teenage spy car magazine citings do not count!) :p

I think I figured it out...for a man/boy who only dreams of owning one of these cars, I realize BrokenBenz must be debating the number of Hot Wheels 1/64 scale MB CLS's that are out there :p

MB S63 AMG Coupe
Traded in 545 for CLS 500

Interesting thought of trading in a CLS for a 645. I actually just went the other way. I bought a 545i last December. The car had serious issues: 1) iDrive complexity, 2) rattling windows, 3) ineffective electronics. While is drove great, all of the other problems did me in. After six months of driving 45 minutes each way on my commute, enough was enough. I saw the CLS and went for it. Had it about a week and I don't regret it for a moment.

Well said...the iDrive component of that car requires a degree in the science of futility and is enough to make anyone run and run fast, coupled with the fact that BMW has not designed a car worthy of a look for the last 7-10 years...love my old 7 Series and loved my X5, but after that, nada. The back end of the new, highly touted 3 series looks like my mother-in-law's Toyota.

I've also learned that ANY car out there can have a problem and yes (shock of shocks!) there are lemons for ALL car manufacturers. I had my old Porsche 911 C4 cab perform like a champ for 4 years without a single serious problem, traded it in for the newest 996/911 and was plagued with problems from the second week through month four, at which point I traded it in for my new baby, aka the CLS.

I was in Midtown two weeks ago for a getaway from SF and I saw 3 different CLS55's that day. Possibly it was because I was near the dealer but they are definitely out there. In SF they are quite common now.

In San Jose, I only bumped in 2 55s and 3 500 so far.

Maybe it is living in Pacific Heights that makes them a more common site. A cool car and causes me to look each time.

i was in NYC for a week and never saw any CLS models...i did see 2 645's though.

i know the 645 is definitely more common than the CLS for now, but MB of Sugar Land, a relatively small dealership, has 3 CLS500's for sale right now.

i drive an ///M6
i work with 2 different people who recently bought an 04 honda pilot and an 05 honda odyssey-- both are in lemon law litigation. the owner of the odyssey also has an 04 toyota 4runner that's been back to the dealer 4x for the same "exhaust issue" as well. those are some of the best "rated" vehicles made, i agree w/ what "swisstrader" said-- ANY manufacturer can and will make a lemon or 2

As a former BMW fanatic, I'll say pity the 645 is as ugly as sin. Ever since Chris Bangle put pen to BMWs the designs have gone down the toilet IMHO . My interpretation is that the 645 is 50 yr old's idea of a sports coupe. At least the CLS is just a good looking stylish sedan. It also drives pretty well for a sedan. I'm trying to persuade my old man to join the MB camp and get one.

I wouldn't go as far as saying the 645 is ugly. It just looks strange from certain angles mostly due to that portruding truck lid. However, I do like the cosy feeling inside the the cabin though in contrast with the CLS, you don't feel like you're sitting in an 80 grand car. Too much plastic inside I guess.

The I-drive is not that bad once you get used to it. But I prefer the MB system. Browsing the menu in the i-drive takes some time, it's easier and faster pressing buttons IMO..

As far as how common or uncommon the CLS is vs the 645... I was in NYC in Feb. not having seen a CLS in boston yet and saw 2 CLS55s and 1 CLS500in one night. Maybe people are noticing them more because they are new to the road... given time they will be as common as every other Mercedes on the road. I dont see a ton of 645s on the road but for what it is there are plenty of them out there. One of the students at my school has a white one... looks nice imo... but then again I dont mind the Banglized Bimmers(just the 7 is hideous)

Yes, but your crappy 1995 CLK is a one of a kind, eh?!

p.s. any idea how many CLS's each dealership gets in inventory?

How do you make BrokenBenz's CLK go faster?
A towtruck.

What do you call the shock absorbers inside a BrokenBenz's CLK?
Passengers.

BrokenBenz's CLK has an air bag. When you sense an impending accident, start pumping real fast.

BrokenBenz went to a dealer the other day and said, "I'd like a gas cap for my CLK." The dealer replied, "Okay. Sounds like a fair trade."

How can you get BrokenBenz's CLK to do 60 miles an hour?
Push it over a cliff.

:p
