So Happy I Didn't Wait for the New S-Class
The new S-Class is one of the ugliest cars I think I've ever seen - sorry to anyone who is a fan of it, but the exterior looks like the old S-Class got drunk one night and got gang-banged by a BMW 7-Series, a BMW 6-Series, a BMW 5-Series, a Maybach, a Hyundai Sonata and finally by a Toyota Avalon. It's a sad day when what is considered to be the Mercedes "Flagship" looks like the ******* child of their biggest competitors.
The interior tried to copy BMW so bad they actually overshot and landed back in the 70's retro era look. The steering wheel looks like it was made out of Lincoln Logs (for those of you that remember those
) Who knows, hopefully it will grow on me a little, but I'm not counting on it. Heck, they even offer a variation with a longer wheelbase - did they have to copy BMW's 7-Series that hard??? The 7 was okay, but I was sure Mercedes would blow it out of the water and try to keep with the unique styling ideas as with the CLS when they made the new S. They need to fire the S-Class designers tomorrow and have the CLS group make every new model from here on out.
This is just my opinion - what does everyone else who has a CLS think?
In MB's defense, I must admit though that the S-class does come in a long and short wheelbase even currently, it's just the "shorty" is not offered in the US. I've seen a few in Europe though and they look great.
The exterior takes a bit of getting used to, but it seems to me all the car manufacturers are taking some bold moves - remember there were those who thought the CLS was abomination at one point. The fender flares seem to be the toughest thing to get used to (just reminds me of the Chrysler stuff going on - oops - maybe that's where it's coming from) But I like the Maybach like trunk lid.
The back view is the one that shows the most departure from previous S, imo, - almost a waterfall of contoured lines from trunklid to exhaust tips.
I wonder how it will look in real life. I remember how much sweeter the CLS was on the showroom after all those months of staring at screen shots of it. Maybe there's a bit of that going for the new S.
For me, I need to look it over for a couple more weeks to decide.
But john87699 - I agree with you absolutely on one point - I am glad I didn't wait for the S.

it looks less and less like a 7 and more like a Mercedes the more i see it (over one week). and the lack of a gear shift has been around since the new ML and R-classes. and the technology will, as usual, pound all the other luxo-barges to submission
ah well, guess should relegate the discussion to the new W221 S-class forum from now on
