"Thwacking" Noise from Suspension - Normal?

I just got my 2007 CLS 550 with 23,000 miles last night. I love the car. I also have a 2008 E350 with the AMG sport package (no air suspension) with 29,000 miles. Driving the CLS, I am noticing a "thumping" (edited for more accurate description than "thwacking") noise coming from the suspension when I hit a decent-size pothole, bump, or rut. It's not terribly loud, but it's certainly not a noise made by my steel-sprung E. The car drives just fine (more isolated and maybe a little less sharp than the E, even in sport mode 2), and I don't really feel much of anything when I hit the decent-size pothole, bump, or rut (less than I feel in the E), but I am not accustomed to the "thumping" noise. Is this normal? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

CLS suspension problems

Did you ever get an answer about your CLS Suspension bump. I have had serious problems on my CLS 55 O6, Had the subframe snap and the rear axel actually broke free from it and landed on the ground. I have had it in the shop, subframe replaced, suspension and air bags f(twice). now it's starting to Bump again. I know what is coming. just wodering if you got anything on this.

Thanks for the reply. But, wow, that is bad news with which to start off my Friday morning. I haven't heard anything from anyone else, but I am going to hope for the best. The car drives just fine. The only issue is the occasional "thumping" sound, and I may just not be accustomed to it since this is my first air-suspended car. I drove my E today, and it's not as though it doesn't make any noise when hitting a decent-sized pothole, bump, or rut, but in the E, the noise kind of resonates throughout the whole car, whereas the "thumping" noise I am hearing in the CLS is much more islolated.

Ok not sure if I am having the same problem but I get thumping and vibration..Feels kind of like when u have warped rotors but it is no were near as bad. It is also similar to having a bent rim(but my rims are new)...I actually can feel it a lot more now that i have taken off my winter rims(stock 17's) and put on my summer rims(20's). Now I have hit a quite a few potholes in my day (i have replaced three rims on my car..all in the front)..i wonder if something has happened to suspension..I will take it in soon, i'll keep u guys updated.

I am having the exact same problem. I had the two front original 18" rims bent, which I replaced with oem 19 rims, aligned the car, but the problem continues. Checked the front rotors and they are not warped. My '04 E500 with 80k miles drives 100% better than my newer CLS550 with only 30k miles
Let us know what you find when you take the car in.

Update: My car had a busted rear driver's-side strut. The independent MB shop I first took the car to could not diagnose the problem, but Mercedes Benz of Cary fixed it today. I loved the car before and thought it drove fine except for the occasional thumping noise on impact, but, man, what a difference! The car is so smooth, solid, stable, and quiet now. I fell in love all over again on the drive home from the dealership today. Very glad it finally got fixed.

Any updates? I'm thinking front wheel hubs or bad tires (still 50%) sounds bad at 25mph. but higher speed can't hear or feel as much.
