Gas Smell and P0456 Code

I have a 2006 CLS 500. After filling the car with fuel, the garage smells like gas. Recently the check engine light came on and I got a P0456 code (minor evaporative leak). I read a thread where E class cars had similar symptoms resulting from bad fuel pumps that were covered under a recall.
Has anybody had a similar problem with a CLS? If so, what corrected the problem.
Thanks,
Chris

After reviewing other threads, I suspected the fuel sending unit under the back seat was leaking and thought it may have been recalled. I took it to the dealer who confirmed it was the fuel sending unit. Bad news was there was no recall. They replaced the sending unit for $900. If I had it to do again, iwould have replaced it myself. I think the part is around $300.

I called they said there was no recall, I popped out the seat and currently the back seat totally smells of gas, I can see a small puddle of gas like 1/2 a shot of gas just sitting there on the tank it is scary. So now there is no back seat and the stupid car smells of gas. How do they mess this crap up I have no idea. the exact same problem is covered for the 2006 CLS under a recall. Of all the things to fail, I cant believe the messed up he fuel system.

My car is a 2006. The dealer said there was no recall. I can't believe there wasn't. All it's going to take is one smoker to light up in the back seat and Mercedes is going to wish they were selling Pinto's.

You have mentioned the recall campaign #2008 - 020001. This clearly states that the 2006 CLS is included in that recall

After pulling out the seat , I notices that I could hand tighten this pump, so I have hand tightened it, I have not driven the car yet, but I hope this solves my problem. If so the stupid thing just got loose and just needed to hand tighten. I did try o get all the gas out last night but I still noticed a few drops this morning in the pump compartment. When I get home later this evening I will let you know if just hand tightening this pump fixed the problem

My CLS55 started with the gas smell and the check engine light this morning. How did you pull up the rear seat? Just push on that one tab and pull up?

Call dealer to see if your vehicle is included in recall 2008020001 (MY03-06, 211 & 219 AMG models) if so they should replace filter assembly and replace with modified version at no cost.

Correct, pull up to remove cushions each cushion has two catches.
