goose..i am a newbie, so i know absolutely nothing about the function of the CLS. So, I cant help. But during my readings on this forum, there is one poster/member I think you should PM. He or she goes by the name konigstiger. His/her responses to problems/issues seem to be pretty darn on point.
I hope that helps, good luck.

ESP inoperative means that the Electronic Stability Program is not functioning (basically traction control).
My suggestion would be to get the error code run by a shop (lol not a dealer) that can tell you what is causing the problem.

Had the same problem on mine it comes on and goes away when you turn off the car right and also the the car rides rough. That problem seems common and most of the time it is sensor in the steering wheel. Im pretty sure its called steering angle sensor or steering angle module. Just type that on google and you will see some answers on how to replace it. I was going to do it myself but I found a shop that did it for a really good price so why not right. They charged me $420 with 2 years warranty so can't beat that i believe the part itself cost $300 and i think you need star diagnostic (some people says you don't and some says you do) i didn't want to take the chance.
Hope this helps i know how annoying it is to have that light on.

It means that the steering angle sensor is bad. It disables cruise control - which I use every single day - so that drove me nuts. It also seems to max out the air suspension so that it rides like a 3/4 ton truck. Don't know the cost of the sensor, etc. as mine was covered under my extended warranty.
it seems like I need to check on my speed sensor n bearing. Duh! That ABS N ESP lights r nuts!
This is for my 2007 E class
Step1 - Take off the airbag (loosen the 2 hex screws at the back of the steering wheel)
Step 2 - Loosen the 2 airbag plugs green & yellow by lifting the yellow plug locks on them - you can use a small flat driver
Step 3 - Get a helper to hold the steering wheel while you loosen the 10 mm allen bolt , dont strain the steering lock while loosening
Step 4 - Have a close look at the exact posision of the steering on the splines before removing or better just mark it
Step 5 - Undo the 3 small hex screws holing the SAS onto the column assembly
Step 6 - Undo the 1 hex bolt at the bottom of the steering coloum (faces the floor)
Step 7 - you need to pull off the entire column assembly. (Grab the column and tug gently)
Step 8 - Look at the oposite side of the entire assembly (end that faces the firewall) and remove the two Hex screws .
Step 9 - the SAS needs to actually twist off of the column assembly (if you look at th new part it makes sense)
remove, replace and reassemble.

Hi. My C180 Kompressor is showing the message "Electronic Stability Programme..visit workshop." It does not rave when I put my foot onto the accelerator. the message goes off only if i leave the engine idling for about 5 to 10minutes but the idling sound will not be normal at all...the raves go up and down. The problem seems worse especially in this cold season. I am in South Africa. My email is: lovemauled@yahoo.co.uk
On my 12/2006 CLS63AMG I had the same issue and was solved by dealer with new steering angle sensor.
This type of sensor (proximity type) must have some kind of battery so it is not depending on milage but rather on the lifetime.

ESP Malfunction E250 2010
I have E250 CGI 2010, a message display, ESP Malfunction.
Before the mechanic replace the accelerator pedal.
and its stop display for some time, and now its appear again.
What kind of problem associate with this message?
on youtube they said: can be brake switch, the wheel and steering wheel off by some degree, fuse of some light.
Can somebody give advice.
Thanks,

If it is a bad alignment the steering angle sensor will detect this ans the ESP light will come on.
This happened to me so many time that I almost expect it to happen with a bad alignment
No, I didn't get an alignment.
On the weekend, I try to use my spare key and the message didn't appear at all.
I need to try its for a while and see whether the message coming back or not.
My guess is there is something wrong with the key I usually use, but its need to be confirm.
Thank you for your suggesting.

That's how I knew I got a bad alignment and it wasnt a sensor malfunction.
