'07 cls550 resonator delete questions

I found a reputable custom muffler shop here in Phoenix to do a resonator delete on my 2007 cls550. I have a couple questions though:

1)Is there only 1 resonator on the car or is there a set closer to the motor? What about the catalic converter(where is it)? If more than one, has anyone removed more than one?

2)is the "preferred" method, to replace with straight pipes or an "X" or "H"? Has anyone tried both and if so, what was the sound difference?

3)what about removing mufflers to get even more sound?

Thanks!

Was hoping some members would have chimed in by now as I have my appt tomorrow at 1pm. I think I will start with a resonator delete using straight pipes and see if I get the sound I'm hoping for from that. I'm concerned to do a muffler delete(although I think it will sound better) because I'm not sure if there is a switch in the mufflers that open/restrict the pipe for more or less flow and I don't really want to lose that if there really is one. Also, not sure about passing emissions in the future without mufflers.

I have an 06 CLS500 and had my resonator removed the other day and replaced with 2 straight pipes (before the exhaust shared the resonator between left and right). I like the way it sounds now when I romp on it, but am not super happy with the sound at idle. I think I am going to redo it with an 'x' or an 'h' pipe to balance the sides. I am hoping that changes the sound at idle a little.

At the shop now. Decided to remove the mufflers and leave the resonators(for now). Just took it for a spin and I actually am glad I went this route. It's definitely got a growl to it, especially when I get on the gas, but it is in no way too loud. I think just removing the resonator(maybe all 3) would be quieter than this. I'm going to give it a week or so, and if I still want "more", I will come back and remove the secondary resonator and replace with an x-pipe.
FYI-the secondary resonator DOES mix the exhaust, so I (and the shop) would recommend using an x-pipe versus straight pipes just to keep the flow out of the tips nicely/evenly dispersed.

i ended up going with the magnaflow universal X-Pipe in place of the stock resonator. Slight difference at idle but can hear it lil more on take off and open throttle. Realistically it gave it only a hair tweak above stock without making it sound like an american muscle car or Jap car. Was a tough decision since my car still has 3 more years of warranty. Therefore a muffler delete or further modification was not reasonable. Sounds classy and at same time does not take away from the beauty of the car.

I would like to hear it too. Put something on you tube. Just set your camera about 10 ft behind the car and give us an idle and a few good revs.
I been wondering about the deletion of mufflers too..

Thumbs up Nice thread

I'm going to remove the resonator and add an X-pipe on my recently purchased 2007 CLS550. Does anybody know if muffler delete will void the dealer warranty?

Well it's been a couple months now with the muffler delete and to be honest, I'm torn . It sounds bad-*** on startup and when I get on it, but there is some "droning" especially around the 30-40mph zone. It really does sound mean, but I think I'd rather put the mufflers back on so I can have a dead quiet cabin, and save up for a new exhaust system that will give me a nice "rumble" on the outside and still maintain a quiet cabin.
Has anyone tried a cat-back exhaust setup or even and amg full exhaust system?

Any aftermarket / amg exhaust is doing to have more noise in the car. You not going to get best of both worlds,.. You will be sacrificing the cabin silence ..

I'd also like to hear a sound clip... I'm trying to decide which way to go... 1) Resonator delete with x-pipe and high flow cats 2) Catback install with high flow cats

My brother has headers, high flow cats, AMG exaust and resonator delete on his CL63 and that car sounds mean, because it is. I've got the 5.5L and would like the same sound but can't go with headers yet.

I don't want any drone effect and I'd like to not go overboard so factory sound isn't enough and definitely don't want to sound like all bark no bite mustangs.

Deleted the resonators. No drone. Only slightly louder on startup, most of the sound comes at rev/accel

I really like it, sounds very good!!! Great video.
How do you like the Cruz tone? And highway/ when you punch the gas ?
Has an aftermarket tone to it, and this is with Removal of one or two resonators?
Photos?
This is a good quick mod that will not effect your warrantee is done nice and neat, at lease I wouldn't think so. It's only for sound Dampening.

I could have easily taken before/after pics but did not and regret doing so... sorry.
There are 3 resos removed in 2009. two single chamber past the catalytic(s) and then a single reso multi-chamber (which should be replaced by an X-pipe)
2007-08 is a different setup with catalytics in this same section from my understanding.

Cruise tone is completely fine, only 5% louder due to the quiet cabin. Depending on what gear you're in, you can hear the exhaust when you punch it at highway speeds. Otherwise, its noticeable during stop/start/city acceleration approx. 25-30% louder under medium acceleration. It's a nice, manageable tone with no drone.

What size 'x' pipe did you purchase? 2.25" or 2.5"?
