2007 CLS550 - Car shuts off mid-drive

Hello everyone,

New guy here. I recently bought a 2007 CLS 550. I have had it for a little longer than a month. One day, when on the freeway, I floored the car and it started to get going, then all the lights on the dash come on, there is a big "drag" feeling like all power has been lost, then everything returns to normal. All in about a 1 second time span. I've had this happen only a few times (I do drive the car hard every once in awhile).

Today, this happened to me twice. Both while on the freeway. Both when trying to pass or merge into traffic. After today, the check engine light is on.

I live in California. I just moved here recently. AutoZone is telling me they can't read codes in California. I've always been able to go into an AutoZone to get the codes and descriptions.
The Mercedes "Stealer"ship wants 160.00 to read the codes (this is South Bay Mercedes) and they are booked until Friday.

So, to summarize:

Has anyone else had this problem? Where the car just shuts off for a split second?
Does anyone have a shop they can recommend in the Long Beach area? Someone who can read the code and tell me what it means?

I'm someone experienced with working on cars, however, this is my first Mercedes.
Any help you can provide would be awesome!
Thanks!

I have had the same issue < https://mbworld.org/forums/cls-coupe...ed-anyone.html >

The dealer was never able to find out why. The best thing you can do, is to document by the dealer. If your lucky, they have found it and have created a bulletin or something. If not, they can place an external hard drive into the car, which will record 40 hours worth of driving and need to be reset by them everytime if it has not re-occurred. But if does, it may capture the issue and possibly get it fixed.

Again, highly recommend get it documented by dealer. This way if later they do find it, and manufacture extends warranty on it, you may get it fixed for free.

If you do find out, please pass informaton along.

I have some updates.
I took the car to a local shop (Benz-Works in SOCAL)
They ran all the tests they could. The check engine light was on and gave some code they had never seen before (can't recall the code) but didn't seem to have anything to do with the problem. I told the tech to go out and drive it, hit the gas hard, and see if the problem shows it self. Nothing happened. They reset the computer for me and I went on my way. I had no problems for the first week, but the issue did come back, and its happened about 4 times after taking it to the shop (6/11/13). Its happened even with very little acceleration. But it ALWAYS happens with acceleration. Still clueless on it. I'll post more if/when I find something. Thanks everyone.

The post above about hooking up a hard drive is a good suggestion.

Get a log in the car and write down everything when it happens.

I don't know how much they will want to charge for this, but I'm sure its a lot. There is no warranty with my car; what happens when the hard drive does find something? I'm sure I'll get the chance to pay them tons of money to fix it. Its more of an annoyance than anything else. If it gets worse, I'll look into it. Other than that, I'm not going out of my way to pay the dealer to log the problem, then pay more money to find out what the problem was, then even more to have it fixed. I'm tech savvy, maybe I'll hookup a diagnostic logger my self and cross my fingers.

1)How long has the problem been happening?
2)Has fuel filters been changed? If ever?
3)You original owner?
You have to figure out if the car is running out of fuel or is the spark kicking in and out.
4)Does it start back up right away? Or does it have to crank?

These will be important questions in trying to narrow the problem.

I've had the car for about 11 weeks. I had the problem first happen to me about a week after I had it.
I don't think the Fuel Filter has been changed, according to my logs I have access to, but I can check that again.
I am not the original owner.
The car just hesitates for about 1 second, if not less. I will give the car gas, and it will start going, then "its like the car shuts off, and turns back on in less than a second" All the lights on the dash come on like I've restarted the car. It happens so fast I could not tell you if there is a message or anything on the screen. The best was I can describe this is: If you were driving a manual car, and you had it in gear, then pushed the clutch in, shut the car off, but the key was still in "run" position, then release the clutch, the car would start right back up. This is what it is like, but very fast and without changing any gears or actually turning the car off. You can feel the loss of power; I'm guessing this is due to being in gear, losing power, then the power comes back on. If you were to give WOT, then release gas, then WOT again really quick. That's what it feels like in the car.; Like a torque jolt.

I'm planning on hooking up a GoPro or something pointed to the dash so I can get this on film. I can't replicate the issue on command. It only happens when you are not expecting it, as all good hard to find problem do

I have not figured it out. I have taken the car to a local shop and told them about the problem. They did an ECU reset and I still had the problem. I have also upgraded my ECU with a tune recently, and I still have the problem. One thing I have started to notice is it happens more often in comfort mode for transmission. It has happened in sport, but seems to be less prominent. The shop thinks it possible a crank position sensor error that only happens for a split second then the car returns to normal function. If I hear or find more information, I will update this thread. IF anyone has the same issue, I suggest posting year/make/model in this thread so we can get a clear history that this is happening to others.

Thanks

Welcome to MBWolrd & Cali!

When I was having this problem it turned out to be the CamPS sensor. I replaced both CPS sensors and never had any problems after.

On my CL500 it was the CPS,,it started doing it just now and then, then got worse till it stopped for long periods when hot, never did it from cold and no fault code left.

Just wantedto submit, that I did get that problem too.

Exactlythe same experienceas above, heavy acceleration on comfort mode. It has to be connectedto this mode setting. On sportit it's always smooth and withoutanyproblem

had this same stalling and hard start problem on my 08’ CLS550, eventually a code came up and was limiting my rpm to 4,000 so i scanned it to see a Crankshaft Position Sensor “circuit A” code, so i went down to autozone and purchased a CPS and got it installed myself in under an hour. Cleared the code and now my cls is running smooth again, can hit redline in gear and no stall and no hard start problems. Easy fix ! Cost about $36

Same thing

A rather long time since this thread was created, but it’s the only reference I can find to this issue. My 2008 CLS with the 350 motor has the same issue. Just imported it into France from Japan; it has about 80k km (so, around 50k miles). Throws no codes when it happens… just a split second shut off and restart IF under speed. If I’m at a stop and then accelerate, the car just dies. Have to put in park and crank it (and it starts). Have ordered a new crankshaft angle sensor and all new cam position sensors and magnets. I hate to throw parts at a problem, but without any codes, I’m at a bit of a loss.

I replaced cam and crank sensors and it hasn’t happened for years
