Converting Airbag to Coilovers

Anyone done this? Not 100% happy with my factory airbags & considering switching over to an adjustable shock/coilover set up.

You might check on the W220 forum, '99 - '06 S class. Many of those cars are having failed airmatic systems now that they are 10+ years old. Some owners might be making that switch.
I believe you will get much more body roll with 4 "independently" sprung corners. Vibe isolation will be less effective also, especially with those 20" wheels. Weight transfer, during acceleration and braking, will also be affected but maybe only noticeable if you are a "spirited" driver. Does your '06 have 3 suspension settings?

I bought my car last year on Sunday, Monday it was dropped off to my buddy's shop for a coilover swap (nothing was wrong with my Air) I just wanted to get rid of the garbage Airmatic, best mod I have done on my CLS so far

My air suspension on the rear is on the going bad. What brands for the conversion do you guys consider?

Air suspension is the only reason why I opt to buy a Mercedes vs. other comparable cars lacking it. The ride is smoother and you don't feel the road vibrations...

My dash cam with vibration sensor never registers false accident-recording when using it in my airmatic ride, but it captures many false ones when used in other coil equipped cars. I have to decrease the sensitivity of the dash cam sensor at that point.

Arnott is the way to go if repairs needed.

Looks good! What Coilover set did you go with? Did you have to modify any hardware to install? Camber kit? Electronic bypass module install to rid "Visit Workshop" warning?

My rear is sagging so I was thinking the same.

I've been looking into this for a few friends. Many people I know have s classes from the early 2000's that look like lowriders right now. I've been urging them to try it. Honestly the airmatic on my cls isn't all that "Plush" if you ask me will springs make it that much worse?

What coilovers did you use and how did you get rid of dash lights once you converted? I'm going with Cieka coilovers I believe. Fully custom. They are bad ***. Anyone chime in would be great.

I swapped out the crap airmatic for arnott coilovers, and wrote and extensive review. Search my posts and you will be please by my analysis. In short, if you are going for reliability Arnott is the best. But if you want an adjustable coilover to lower your car, I cannot speak to that option. I'm just happy to get in my car and not have the suspension fail!!

Sweet man. Yeah I trust Arnot for sure. I just am concerned it will be too high at stock height with Arnots system. I have low profile 25 series tires on 20s so afraid of Gap in fender

Yes, the Arnott up is very high. There is a big space between my tire and wheel well. It is not bad looking, but would definitely not be for someone who likes the car lowered with minimal space there. The car handles amazing though, and as I said, I am just happy to have reliable suspension and not have the crap airmatic.

Yeah man. I got stranded the other day. Front went out. Bought the replaced arnot air suspension and still hate it. Cost me ,$1500 from a local mechanic but I'm still willing to spend $1200 ish for coilovers and install to not have stupid air matic. I'm with you. And the handling part is huge for me as well.

I have the stock 18's, and may upgrade to the 19's since there is plenty of room. Will try to remember to take some pics this weekend..

I was thinking about doing the coilover conversion until I learned you can't lower the car. I'm not the type that drops to the ground, but that wheel gap has to go...

Do you need to change the rear lower control arm?The airmatic control arm does not have spring mounts.

Do you have camber kits in the front and rear? Do you get inner tire wear? Your car sit awesome. I'm about that low but I don't have camber kits. I was told to zero the toe and the camber wouldn't matter. So I'm checking guys that sit as low as I am. I'm not sure if tire width makes a difference. My rears are 315/25/20 on a 20x11
