AMG GT S Top Gear Lap Time
Top Gear reviewed the GT tonight (in the UK) and as expected, they only had good things to say about the car. Given what we've seen elsewhere, this is no surprise.
What did surprise was the lap time - 1:17.5
That, quite frankly, is outrageous. Nothing this side of what you'd class as a hypercar has gone round that track faster. It's even more impressive when you consider the power deficit the AMG has compared to most cars sharing a similar lap time.
To give an idea just how good that time is, here's a few Top Gear track lap times to compare:
Bugatti Veryon SS - 1:16.8
Nissan GT-R - 1:17.8
SLS Black Series, Enzo, Murcielago - all 1:19.0
458 Italia - 1:19.1
997 GT2 - 1:19.5
And for the resident GT3 fanboys - 1:23.1 (admittedly a 997 and I'm sure the 991 would close the gap)
The above also reminds just how effective the GT-R is, although I suspect the AMG will be more comfortable, refined and better built (as well as being faster
)
So then.....what a turnaround for AMG
Looks like they've created a proper sports car with the chassis capability to beat the best. And it sounds like they've managed to do this whilst maintaining a level of refinement and civility that most other cars generating similar times probably won't have.

I have a feeling this seasons stig is a faster driver than previous seasons...the hurracan also did a really fast lap, but from other reviews I've seen they have complained it doesnt drive as well as its rivals on track. still very impressive time for the amg gt and i cant wait to have a go in one

It's a fair shout about the potentially variable times derived from having a different Stig.....and yes, that Huracan time is outstanding.
But that car is 4wd (which must add significant traction benefit on a relatively tight track like Dunsfold), it does have over 600bhp (so is over 20% more than the AMG) and at 200k+ (GBP) I'd class it well into Hypercar territory. When all that is considered, that the AMG came within 1.7 seconds of the Huracan's time is even more impressive.
With regards tyres, I'm sure I read that AMG were fitting all the press cars with the standard road tyres (they were certainly making a point about this at the Laguna Seca launch).

yeah you really need the same driver on the same day etc...
how can it be quicker than the sls black series. with 120 less hp and equal weight?
