Mercedes-AMG GT Concept Has Us Scratching Our Heads
Could this be Mercedes-AMG's first totally hideous design in decades?

It's very unfortunate that MB chose these ridiculous wheels and the color choice wasn't wise either.
Moreover, it is confusing to call the car a GT concept (not GT4 as was stated on this forum before) which confuses people since the car is NOT based on the AMG GT.
The car is based on the next CLS platform, so more or less an E-Class...
That said, the car is slated to be available for sale already next year. Interesting also that they showcase a sub-3sec. 805hp hybrid drive on this car.

The front end looks like the child of a BMW and a Mustang. The wheels are an interesting choice that I don't particularly like. The rear diffuser looks out of place without at least a lip spoiler of some sort (not just a bump or does this thing have active aero?) But those are my only major complaints.
The body lines have a nice flow to them. Would be nice to see some interior shots.

And I'm pretty sure the real thing is going to look quite a bit less 'in your face' than the drawings.

I agree it looks a bit like a Mondeo that's fallen into a large can of muscle car candy apple red.
But it's a concept hybrid. I don't think the final one will look so radical. It also doesn't fit into the 'language' they're using these days, it has more from a Chris Bangle slab design.
I simply object to the use of the moniker 'disappointing' in the article.

Yep. The "editors" throw a lot of shade our way at the GT guys. It's just a freakin concept. If you look at the physical car, not photos, and change the color and wheels, it's fine. Plus, who is dumb enough to think they are going to use our same exact aluminum chassis, lengthened, really, who is this dumb?!
Also, the editor probably will not be able to afford this 800 horsepower hybrid anyway, so it's not going to matter.

Chrome Wheels - A Blow to Sports Car Cred!
We have a '16 Ed1 - a beautiful car with choices that apparently represent the collective thinking of a lot of design folks - wheels, color, interior, piano black bits, carbon fiber roof, fixed wing like the F1 Safety Car, etc. AND the GT3 is doing great at the track, e.g., a 1st and 3rd in class at the Sebring 12 hours! BUT those wheels on the concept - chrome with a gold accent on an alleged member of the GT family? Even here in SoCal, Orange Co, that would not be acceptable. And why didn't someone do an exhaust extension delete before the concept was shown to the public. That said, I do like the shape of the body and the integration of the GT front and rear. But no matter how much HP it has, it must handle like a sports car. In 2009, I was part of a focus group for the GT - the "Porsche 911 Killer" as it was known. M-B was looking for owners of the two cars we had at the time (SL63 and 911 Carrera S). I stressed that it was important to lose the bling that was on some M-B cars at the time (plus I provided input on performance, weight, transmissions, price point, etc.). The competition between M-B/AMG and Porsche is outstanding for us gearheads. We have an order pending in NetStar for a GT C. M-B needs to keep driving the GT family in the direction of the GT R and GT3 race car. Porsche is keeping the 911, Boxster and Cayman pure as sports cars and offering other lines to those who want more practicality.
