Selenite Grey: Metallic vs Matte
Selenite Grey: Metallic vs Matte
I just cant' decide which of these to go with for a GTR. Is the matte Selenite more delicate? Am I going to have get a lot of the car wrapped with some sort of protective film? I've heard that if you need to repaint due to a scratch or dent, you have to repaint the whole panel, if not the whole side of the car. Is this true?
I want the car in grey, so have the same dilemma as you. If you go matte, I'd get the whole car covered in a high quality 'clear bra' like Suntec or Xpel Ultimate. Trying to match a body panel will be extremely difficult, and is the main reason I'm not going matte and just having the front end covered.
The other option: get the regular grey and then have the car covered in Xpel Stealth. Protection and 'matte' appearance. The best of both worlds! lol

My order is for the metallic. While the magno paints have apparently improved in durability, they still require significantly more work when chipped or scratched versus the traditional glossy paints.
What stinks is the relatively few GT Rs in the selenite metallic versus the magno. There are couple of photos/videos online showing the metallic paint. It looks good.

This is a selenite metallic with black wheels.

Thank you for the links. Very helpful. I hadn't heard about autogespot before. Good resource.
So... I think I'm leaning toward the gloss metallic. The dealer peeps are saying the matte is really hard to care for. If you get a scratch or tree sap or anything... it's a nightmare.
That said... I am starting to think about going with the solar beam yellow instead. Selenite grey is beautiful but it's also a bit pedestrian. A lot of grey cars out there...

For what it's worth, I've seen the GTR in virtually every color (AMG Driving Academy). I'm not a fan of the matte gray finish in the GT/S. But I have to say, in the GTR it was my clear favorite. Something about the extra CF contrasts that set it off. The red one was also sharp.
I have a Selenite gray Edition 1. GTR didn't look quite as good in this color combo to my eye.

Good to know, thanks. I kind of have a similar point of view for the Solarbeam Yellow. I think it looks great on the GTS without all the extra carbon runners and fixed wing. But on the GTR, I think it looks a bit... weird. I think it's the extra contrasting parts.

Yeah, I thought later about the solaebeam and agree with you. The GT/S is more understated so color can be the central focus. White looked great on the GTS too but not so much on the GYR. Solarbeam looks ok but not as striking. Matte gray with lots of CF just works on the GTR but only as a garage queen.
If I get a GTC Coupe, I might go yellow. If I stick with the GTR, it'll be grey metallic.
I hear you on the grey. I keep going back and forth as well. The wife is adamant against the green but I may be making some progress in convincing her otherwise.
Solarbeam is great as well. I keep gravitating to the selenite magno but the upkeep is scaring me as well.

Folks say you can have the car wrapped with xpel or suntech or whatever. I have no experience with them though.

matte is hard to take care of. If you have any scratch or stain you have to repaint. there is no fixing, buffing, rubbing. No waxing, no normal car wash. All you can do is clean it. I recommend you have it wrapped before you drive it. You have to wrap it with matte film. But if you have a gloss car, you can wrap it with matte film and it will turn it matte. The only problem with that is you have gloss around the jambs, hood etc.

I am on my second MB matte car and I daily drive mine.
Wrapping it is the safest bet to avoid the issue of paint chips.
I will add that there are no issues with sap or related items. It cleans off real easy with the right products.
I did wrap the front end on my GT and the back by the tires. After 9K miles, the entire car still looks pristine.
It is also so much easier to take care of as there is no waxing involved.
If you want it, go for it.

I really hesitated after reading this thread .... I had a gloss GTS grey selenite.......the GTR image fits better the Matte in my opinion....
I am sticking with Matte ...dont mind washing car by hand myself.
I may consider wrapping if Anybody know a really high end film that allows the Matte magneto to look exactly as intended ???

Changed my mind again ! ...going metallic for sure.
Was in NYC dearship and was very lucky to see two GTS next to each other ... metallic and magneto selenite grey !
I will get tired of the Matte ....the hood looks cool as its large surface reflects light ....but the metallic is classic and better for long lasting beauty.
