Noise test for track days

Does anyone here have to pass static noise tests before being allowed on track days? If so, what readings are typical?

I've run my stock GTR at a track that has a very strict 96db limit and it passed. They don't tell you how loud your car was, just if you pass or fail. If your exhaust is stock I'm sure you will pass

This makes me happy. Finally got to drive a GT R today, and ended up buying it. With the valves closed it’s surprisingly quiet, at least inside, so I should be ok at my local track which has a static test of 101db, and Brands Hatch with a 98db limit.

96db is really really low btw lol, geez.

Happy you bought the car, Peter.

Options?

Very interested to to hear your thoughts once you get it out to the track.

It's missing a couple of carbon packs, I may look to retrofit the interior carbon at a later date. It has 8,000 miles and is 18 months old. I've only done a tame road test, but the steering feels epic so far.

I love that colour, Peter, and with the yellow contrast interior stitching I bet it’s a real looker. If it doesn’t have it already, I’d make sure to get Xpel Stealth coverage on as much as possible since you’ll be tracking the car. Matching the matte paint won’t be easy.

Thanks Bish. Luckily it has full Xpel PPF already. I will replace the front panel as there are a couple of impact marks.

Amusingly this car did one track day and wrecked all the discs, it’s had a £15,000 warranty claim a few months ago to replace all discs and pads. From what I can gather from the after sales manager at the dealership, what might have happened is the pads wore down to the backing plate. Bad for MB, good for me. I’ve already bought Pagid RSC1 pads, SRF fluid, and working on a discount for the RENNtech cooling ducts.

I will get better pics when I collect it, hopefully tomorrow.

Car is gorgeous!!

May I ask where you got the RSC1s from? I am seriously thinking of putting them on the car prior to my next track weekend as I really heated up the new set of OEM pads at my last event.

I read about this car, either here, and/or on the AMG Forum. I simply don't know how you can ruin the CCMs unless you are frankly, quite careless. And as to how you can do it in one track day? The only thing I can think of is this: Owner went out on green OEM pads and did not break them in correctly. That means going out on your first session and ramping up your speed until you are at a speed/lap time where you start to feel the brakes begin to fade. At this point in time, the pads are outgassing and bedding in. You then need to immediately come into the pits and let the brakes completely cool down. Now, the pads are 'bedded-in' and probably well 'burnished', meaning they have a whitish colouration at the leading edge next to the rotor. Even OEM pads will then hold up well if prepared correctly. That being said, the RSC1s are more track oriented and still rotor 'friendly', so please let me know your thoughts on them. Definitely prepare those pads as above, or to the letter as per Pagid's recommendations.

I got the pads from my usual supplier Martin at https://www.raceparts.biz/ in the UK. Roughly £800, which is around $1,000.

I don’t think it was this car you read about, I don’t think the previous owner is forum type of a guy, I recall a thread like it, now that you say. I’ll have a quick search.

I’m a complete believer in bedding in brakes, always did so with the RS29/RSL29 on my M3.

97db @ 4,500rpm in both exhaust valve settings, this is s static test. I read that the exhaust valves in the open setting are also throttle position dependant, so they were probably still closed at the throttle % required to maintain 4,500rpm.

This is is a good thing, means all tracks are available to me.

The static test involves holding the meter at a 45 degree angle half a meter away from the exhaust exit, I saw him test each exhaust in turn.

Most tracks the microphone is like 50 to 100 feet away so it will drop a lot from 97db

Yes, for the drive-by tests. Here in the UK at most circuits you have to pass a static noise test before you even get to see the track. My local is 101db, Brands Hatch can be as low as 98db for evening sessions, others like Silverstone are 105db.
