Terrible track day
Terrible track day
I finally got the GTR out on the track today in Joliet, Illinois (Autobahn country club). I did three 20-minute sessions over the course of the morning.
Engine: It is beast. When coming out of corners and on a roll it's simply catapults the car forward, cars can't get away or are caught. It never seem to break a sweat during the sessions.
Tranny: As others have experienced, this thing is in the right gear every damn time. The car is never upset as you break hard from high speed into low speed corners. I just don't see anyone being able to shift as fast and at the appropriate time as this damn transmission. I don't think the temperatures got over a typical day of Street driving.
Brakes: I have the steel, no issues. Plenty of pad left. I have driven and seen all types of cars have a "pedal to the floor issue" at the autobahn. I will admit that I was not driving the car all out - my first day, getting to know the car, the traction control, etc. I have seen the steel v CCB debates
( https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.aut...r-race-tracks/) and believe that all brakes can be roasted. I will cont to push the steel and see where it goes.
Tires: they are definitely sticky, but I do see a few seconds left in it with slicks. I'm sure they can do more, but again first day at the track I did not push them to the end. I did wind up with 33 to 34 PSI hot.
Handling: I drove with the traction control with two red bars showing. At no time did my rear end come out from under me. I did not really appreciate any significant understeer, the lack of speed in corners was frankly due to my testosterone deficiency. I was overwhelmed by this car's performance.
Looks: Porsche GT3 and Corvettes are dime-a-dozen at the track, I am the lone GTR. Monkey see, monkey do, I don't know, but everyone loves to look at the MB. Love a car I can take to a fancy dinner and then chew things up at the track.
So what was terrible about today...
1) I need to figure out a way to tell the wife that I need to spend more time at the track
2) I need to start thinking about a dedicated set of track wheels/tires
3) I will probably be spending a lot of money on brakes
These are terrible first world problems to have...
If you have not tracked your GTR, you have no idea of what It can do.

Just be reminded to manually release the parking brake when you are in the pit so hot pads don’t get moulded to the discs. The two clicks on TC is pretty engaged. I have experimented with 3 lights and I can control it but I am not skilled enough to keep it at bay with four lights. More lights=less traction control
Very nice write up.

Yep, learned about the brake release here before I went to track.
The 2 red bars is 5 lights showing (3 yellow, 2 red).

I couldn’t agree more...
I have been going to the track since 2012. My most recent event a few weeks ago was my best ever. I’ve tracked my GTS and the difference between it and my GTC is night and day... I too left the last track day wondering how I can get ventilated seats in a GTR so I can move into that next... these cars are so capable and bring so much personality to to the table...

Great write up btw, and I agree with MG1422: upgrade the OEM brake fluid; get better pads; think about replacing the OEM rotors with GiroDisc, etc, and get brake cooling ducts installed.
