GT R On Track Faster than 911 Turbo S

This is from a Car & Driver review from a few years ago, but wanted to repost here so that our Porsche friends understand what a track Weapon the AMG GT is:
No corner better shows this than Hog Pen, where the rear-wheel-drive GT R exits at 112.0 mph. That speed obliterates the competition, even the all-wheel-drive Porsche 911 Turbo S. AMG knows that an epic lap is all in the exit speed. This car is stuck to the track and stuck to the top of the time sheet, hammering a lap in 2:43.4, a new LL4-class record and just 0.3 second behind the quickest car we’ve ever driven here, the five-times-pricier 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder.
https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...-2017-feature/
And I believe that AMG just became the most winning F1 team of all time. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Compare that to Porsche, which everyone just associates with motorsports, but they don't even have an F1 team. And we all know F1 is the pinnacle of the sport.

Mercedes AMG are the most winningest team of the modern hybrid era; but not the most winningest team of all time iirc.

Im a Benz and Porsche lover but to be honest, Ive had way more "sports cars" via the Porsche brand (Turbos, GT3, GTS, C4S, etc). And while the GTR is more of a track weapon, after having had 5 Turbo S cars I know what is right for the street and for me. The Turbo S is the absolute "all rounder" in my book. I dont think Ive ever been dissappointed in my Porsche ownership. Benz has rarely led me astray but when shopping for a sports coupe Porsche is usually my first review. I understand the article is associated with track use and Im not that guy. Id assume most guys who are here outside of the GTR owners fall more into my category.

I dont buy my cars based on what is winning at F1 either. Well maybe when I had my Ferraris LOL. I compare Porsche to Benz in my personal driving experiences and needs. Both great brands for what they serve but Benz is more of a luxo model in my book and for end users (non racers). Granted over the past years Benz has made some leaps and bounds in the segment that has been Porsche dominated. I commend them and really do still enjoy my 4 1/2 year old Benz GTS.

no surprise there since the GTR's main porsche rival is the GT3/RS

Fast and Really Fast Sports Cars
I reckon Porsche's involvement in sports cars racing made it easier to trickle down the technologies their road cars. 911 GT R is practically the same car as it's street brethren sans the homologation bits.

F1 technologies though are still quite a stretch too far. I am sure they will make their way to our cars. Eventually.

The AMG GT C is your street GT R. I find modern 911s rather soul-less (other than manual GT3s or a manual 911T). Yes, they are fast; but they are rather boring to drive at normal speeds.
Not so with the AMG GT.

GTS really is a monster

While the review quoted was for a GTR, it is interesting that a "mere" GTS a few years ago was driven in a review at Willow Springs by Randy Pobst of Motor Trend in a head-to-head with a Jaguar F-Type Coupe R and the GTS turned a 1.27. At Willow Springs turning a 1.27 is gigantic. I raced there for years and for a street car from the press fleet to turn that speed shows the power and balance it has. I don't know how much faster a GTR would do there...but it shows the "bones" it has.

I think I remember him also saying something to the tune of it being the only car he's ever driven for the channel that was so good that he wanted to buy one.

Totally agree. It’s unfortunate that the automotive press seems to have forgotten the other models, once the GTR was released. I’d love to see a track time comparison of the GTS/C/R — I bet the difference won’t be as large as some think.

There is a recorded GTR track time at WS of 1:25.37, driver unknown
Also, if you compare the cars the GTR is known to hang with then you could expect times in the mid 1:23's say with Pobst driving.

So the difference between a GTS and GTR is pretty big. The gap would be much less for a GTC, probably less than 2 seconds.

The tires on the GT-R are at last 3 seconds faster than the tires on the Turbo S. There's not many tires faster than the ZP compound's that were on the GT-R for this test, they'v been proven as fast as Hoosier R7's on their first heat cycle. The Porsche Turbo has always been saddled with "slow" tires as Porsche doesn't want it to have faster lap times than the GT3.
Anyone with a lot of track experience that reads articles like this, we go straight to the data page that shows the tires run. Your average magazine consumer doesn't realize the massive lap time variances of tires, even a really good summer performance tire these days is 3 seconds slower than these specialty compounds manufactures keep coming up with now that lap times sell cars as much as the old days when only acceleration tests mattered.

My 280 hp Lotus Elise turned a 1:27 at Big Willow 12 yrs ago.

A standard Elise had half the horsepower, so your power to weight on that Elise is likely the same as the GTS, so it’s even more impressive for the GTS to have matched it!

And in my 140 hp Swift DB2 I turned a 1:24 - however it had a spec weight of about 1,330 lbs with driver! And it had a stock (spec) single overhead valve inline 4 Pinto engine. No tweaking allowed!

How about the fact that the AMG GT has better weight distribution than the 718 Cayman GT4!! (
