Transmission Failure

I bought this brand new in 2016 and in the past 4 years have only managed to put 2900 miles on it. It has been hibernating at my vacation home on a tender, driven a couple miles a month when weather permits. Well on Tuesday I decided I should drive it and use up the Fuel, get the oil change done and get a state inspection done. My commute was about 80 miles-I left at 6 am and average speed was prob around 75-80 mph with the occasional blast to 100 here and there. I had traveled about 65 miles when I got a warning on the dash for transmission oil overheating. Hmmm, better pull over but there is construction and no breakdown lane for as far as I can see, just jersey barriers and now some heavy congestion of traffic forming. Step on the throttle a little and it’s revving but not accelerating at all so hit the hazards and let it coast. Next warning light Withings about 10 seconds was something to the effect of locking differential inoperable I think? I was more focused on trying to find a spot to pull off the highway and the cars riding my ***..finally there’s a spot to pull off the side of the road and at this point I was probably coasting at about 10 mph. I put the car in reverse to try and back in behind the jersey barrier for some protection from the car’s wizzing by but again, nothing. Now i got a check engine light and transmission malfunction error message. I called a flatbed, we got her loaded up and off to the local dealer. So far they have been in communication with AMG Germany and from what the data they have pulled they’re telling me new transmission for sure, drive shaft recall as well. Worst part, warranty expired about a month ago! Hopefully Mercedes steps up to the plate and helps out with this one- 2900 miles it’s barely broken in!

If it's just the driveshaft. If there is a transmission issue, then that's a different thing altogether. The low mileage provides the leverage to cover any hardware even out of warranty, but MB will usually expect the labor to be covered by the customer... They may whine about if annual maintenance was not performed (independent of mileage).

Good Luck!

This actually happened to me over the weekend. I have a 2018. Was cruising with some friends and that same error happened. Somehow it went away after restarting and I drove it a bit hard to test if it "truly went away"

Now I feel like I should have taken it into the dealer asap...

I’d be very interested to hear what they determine as the root cause, if it was the driveshaft failure that we’re all familiar with followed by the necessity to continue driving it causing the trans to go.

For the first time in my years of car ownership, I haven’t modified the power on this car yet. My warranty goes through March, and I’m most worried about the trans. If this was just due to the driveshaft, then I wouldn’t be as worried since I’ve already had the recall performed.

Does your extended warranty allow for turbos, downpipes, or a tune?

I'll let you infer from this what you will, without making it blatantly obvious... But they only require a visual inspection before signing off on major powertrain warranty work. Which is one of the reasons I was on board with getting it.

No real findings as of yet, just that the car def needs a transmission. Apparently the drive shaft is still intact and functioning as it should according to the service writer. The closest transmission is in Texas I believe so that is on its way. I’ll prob stop by the dealership tomorrow to see if I can talk to the tech to get better details/facts about what may have caused it.

This happened to me when driving my 2016 home from the dealer! It took 4 days for the repair which included a series of connections to the HQ. No problems thereafter.

Well it happened to me again on my 2018 GTC...Build date is August 2018...gonna have the dealer look at it this time.
I turned off the car immediately and turned it back on right after and it went away.

The only thing that is in common between the two incidents was that I was driving on a bumpy road and then switched onto a smooth road. And both times I had been driving spiritedly for a bit.

The dealer shared it was a software issue that required a wifi download from Germany to fix. I didn't ask for more details but whatever they did solved the problem.
