AMG GT Seat Belts Aren’t Universal

I purchased some seat belt assemblies out of an Australian AMG GTS in hopes of offering a color seatbelt exchange program here on the forum (still in the works but temporarily delayed).

As I recently came to find out, the Australian seat belt assemblies are not compatible with American-spec cars. I had the Australian assemblies re-webbed before finding this out.

Aussie: 1 electrical connection
US: 2 electrical connections

Australian version on the left. American on the right.

Fortunately, I was able to figure out how to swap the belts out of the assembly, but the wife wasn’t happy when my two hour project turned into several hours!

Once I get my hands on some US spec assemblies, I’ll make another thread for the seat belt exchange and will make a “how to” video for anyone wanting to do it themselves. If anyone in Australia wants to buy some assemblies on the cheap, let me know.

I wondered what made the seat belts cost so much...that's quite a package. My GTRA came in with yellow belts instead of black.. The dealer changed them out N/C but it took a over a week to get the parts and install.. in the mean time the service manager told me the new belts were $2,400 before labor and the install would be close to a day... a significant amount of the roadster top assembly had to be removed.. Maybe more simple in a coupe.. Sorry that your idea didn't pan out...

The coupe isn’t quite as extensive. I could probably do it in two hours on the next go, knowing what I know now. The carpet behind the seats, rear strut brace, and a few panels have to come out. I didn’t have any instructions, so it was just a matter of feeling my way through it.

No worries on the plan. It wasn’t a money making venture. Simply a way for common enthusiasts to make their cars in their liking without suffering a couple weeks of downtime for the turnaround.

Oh, that’s a really good point. I’m gonna go switch back to the bland OEM belts. Thank you for the insight and saving my car the embarrassment of money and time wasted.

I don’t plan on doing the rewebbing as a step by step, as I would normally have one of the two professional shops do it, since it requires sewing. This ended up being a special circumstance. Should I take up sewing, which I’m considering, then I’ll do one.

This came out great! What did the project cost you all-in? Minus the Australian assemblies I guess. Looking to potentially do this.

there is a company on ebay that remans seat belts. As an additonal service they also offer re-webbing service to change color. It only costs $100 a belt inc return shipping. Quite a cheap option I think to have any color you choose

Does their re-webbing material and process meet current Safety Standards?
Other considerations: materials may break down with Heat & UV exposure. How are their materials stored/sourced?

OEM Belts are made to meet stringent safety standards.

Am not sure I'd trust any critical safety component to an eBay outfit, or even aftermarket, without published testing/certification.
