It’s a must on cars of this value.

But that’s just me, I don’t gamble with peace of mind.

Not once.

Think about it. Never do it.

I’ve tried over the years to get it
But it’s only been selectively available to certain schools. I finally purchased it today as my event was covered. It’s been gnawing away at me more so lately because the events are much more crowded than they used to be and now result in the track time being split into groups of novice/intermediate/advanced.

I’ve been doing these days since 2012 and only last year my regular insurance asked me to sign a track day waiver even though I knew I wasn’t covered at the track.

My gut has been telling me to do something after the last couple track days last year and early this year. Happy I did. I was just curious as to others thoughts. Thanks!

Check with your insurance provider. As long as you are not participating in timed events you should have coverage.

I never used to use it for many years, but as my cars became faster and more expensive it became a necessity. The piece of mind it gives is tremendous, and worth every penny of the $800-$1000 I was paying for a track weekend on my GTR with both myself and my son driving.

Check out Open Track for insurance as they offer an annual policy that if you do more than approximately 6 weekends per year more than pays for itself. I highly recommend them.

The vast majority of major insurance carriers here in the US will not cover you if your car is damaged on a ‘racing surface’ regardless of what type of event you’re participating in.

Bish,
Very true. In fact most insurance companies have changed the wording under physical damage exclusions. My USAA policy says "Loss to any vehicle while it is being operated in, or in practice for any driving contest or challenge". Note: no reference to racing. Do you think an insurance company is going to roll over on a $150K or more total loss if they suspect track damage. It will cost you $10-15K to get an attorney to sue the insurance company under a Declaratory Relief Action or Breech of Contract and your chances of prevailing are about 30% at best.
The second issue if you damage the car and lie on the loss report that the damage occurred by some other means then you've negated coverage by fraud and now looking a criminal act. The snowball gets bigger if you leased the car as now you have deal with the leasing company since you violated your lease agreement. When the policy used language such as racing as an exclusion there was a lot of wiggle room. No more.
I'm in the business of litigation and maybe I pushed the envelope in past years but no more.
I've used Lockton's track day coverage and they make it very simple to use.

It’s a no brainer
I’ve gone without it in the past simply because it wasn’t available unless you were in a “school” environment. They finally changed it to cover most days and it’s pretty straightforward. I had coverage bound within seconds of filling out the form and pressing send. Like Bish said, the peace of mind is worth it alone... Have a great weekend everyone!!

Hey, do you mind PM me regarding roughly how much it costs? I'm also in BC and have a GTR.

Thanks!

It'll tell you the price right on the site
Can only put in a replacement value of 150k though. Apparently you can go hire but need an underwriter to consider it.

1 day event and 150k value = $984

Some, (most?) will limit coverage to $150K US, but not Open track where I believe there may be no limits. They are also one of the only road course insurers where you can purchase liability coverage also.

I use opentrack.com as well - they are very easy to work with.

It's really a peace of mind and protection of investment at a small cost (comparing to all other track cost), anything can happen on a track, oil spill from the car in front of you, track condition change, etc, no one will be forever safe.
