AMG exhaust snap, crackle, pop

I have an AMG GTC and I'm on the fence about the exhaust popping in Sport+ mode. I like a little of it but on aggressive downshifts it sounds like I'm dropping M80s. I think it's a shame there is not a middle ground setting where it doesn't sound contrived. Maybe that's just me?

Which leads me to questions about exhaust valve controllers. Can I assume that the popping is created by ECU adjustments that allows unburnt fuel into the exhaust system and has nothing to do with the valves?

So, if i purchase a valve controller, and I set it for 100% open in Sport rather than Sport+, will I get a nice, louder and beefier exhaust note without the fireworks?

Or, and I realize this is unlikely, is there a way to get a little popping and not a fourth of july celebration when I downshift? maybe a tune?

If you can turn the popping sound off with a switch, it's for show, not go. Like a wing on a Tercel.

It’s just you.

Mine has the valve module and I love it. Maybe trade for a quieter car or get a 2020?

Pops usually help with anti-lag, so not necessarily for show only. The exhaust gases keep the turbines spinning. The rich mixture (that can produce pops) can also help with keeping temps down.

You can have a sport+ or race engine set (that would produce pops) and put the exhaust on silent. You could save it on Individual for easier access.
You'll still get pops, but they won't be as loud.

I was just thinking that!
Create an I* / Individual Setting so that the exhaust is dialed down but you still have the engine, transmission, suspension to your preference

Not interested in quieter, quite the opposite. I just think they overdid it with the popping sounds. Just my opinion.

With your valve module, do you feel like the exhaust note (other than popping) is the same in sport and sport+ setting? Which module do you have?

Interesting, I did not know that. I can't tell any significant difference in turbo lag between sport and sport+ but it's possible there is a difference.

I'm hoping for louder exhaust but less popping. Researching the modules. Thank you!

There should be no popping whatsoever unless you are in S+ or Race settings. It's only those settings that run the car rich enough to create the popping sound.

What he said, honestly they should of just had the I-C, S+ and Race mode.
as far as popping goes, the more the merrier imho.

Mine doesn’t crackle so much

but the overall volume is bassier and more volume. My module is the OG version of the Renntech one being sold with the wireless remote.

Pro tip: if you avoid the paddles most of the cracks don’t happen. Cold starts not included.

my 2020 car pops like hell! Sure it doesn’t do it below 4k rpm but it is not quieter! I was tealy
curious how the opf would sound but I had a buddy do some fly bys for me and launches and the car is seriously loud from the outside!

I would definitely recommend anyone on the fence about sound actually getting someone else to drive so they can hear in person from outside!
