Tips for a cross-country drive?

Hey boys, I’m moving from DC to LA in a month and wondering if any of you had experience with long distance moves in an AMG GT/S/C/R. I’ve done the move before in a Honda Accord but will be the first time driving that far in my AMG.

Do any of you have tips/route suggestions? Looking to avoid as much police, debris, and in general make it to LA in one piece. Do I have to worry about engine temps from driving 8+hrs a day?

Thanks in advance, any input is greatly appreciated.

Not specifically from the AMG GT perspective, but from a car perspective you don't have to worry. These cars are built to go triple digit speeds on the German Autobahn for as long as you want. The US highway speeds are a Sunday afternoon drive in comparison. I love grand touring. Haven't done a cross country drive, but have done numerous up to 12 hour drives in a day with a bunch of high speed/canyon driving in between. I did a 2 months European Delivery trip with my '19 C63S Coupe and drove almost 7000 miles in that time. Some of the 12 hour trips were in Europe. Driving from Switzerland to Copenhagen for example at triple digit speeds through Germany whenever possible. That's what AMGs are built for. The only thing I would point out given the time of the year you are doing this are proper winter tires for driving through the snow regions. That can be a challenge to find for these cars. Not sure what you are driving on in Virginia, but don't attempt this on summer performance tires, and all-season tires are only good as long as they can cut through the snow and make contact with the pavement. You don't wanna get caught with a powerful RWD car on all-season tires in a snow storm frankly.

Clear bra or some kind of a protection for the front end and mirrors and where tires throw dirt on the body is a sound advice.

I did the reverse 3 years ago when I purchased a 14 Panamera Turbo and it was a great trip. Palm Springs to DC. I'd take 66 to 81S (or 95/64 to 81S) then out 40 until California to 15 and then 10 into LA. Best overall roads and great view and you should be out of the cold most of the trip. If you haven't done the trip don't forget to stop at Winslow Arizona so you can stand on the corner for a moment. :-) Other side trips I'd recommend would be death valley, grand canyon. Did it in 2.5 days at a leisurely 80mph... I mean speed limit. I

test drove a GT C Roadster yesterday and I'm hooked. Looking to buy a AMG GT C in California and drive it back to DC over 8-10 days a make side stops for fun. Going to buy in the next 30 days if some of the California MB dealers would email me back. :-(

The car will have no worries as long as you stay out of the snow.

The car does have a bra for the front, I'm hoping this would suffice... I am paranoid about the sides as well (future proofing). Has anyone done PPF around the entire car? Seemed pricey but I can see why it would be useful. I've already dealt with a windshield crack from multiple DC -> NYC trips. Tempted to get protection for the windshield too.

Full ppf and on my second clearplex for the windshield. I like keeping the paint and glass perfect underneath since mine is a long term keeper. My first clearplex was pretty scuffed up, but when we peeled it off, the windshield was perfect. It's not cheap, but I don't worry as much about kicked up debris on the highway or some idiot in a parking lot dinging my door.

Superswiss gives good advice. The most perilous part of your journey will be through the Rockies. They can be a real problem in the winter.

Get a good radar detector and use Waze. I've done Portland OR to Baltimore MD, Denver to Baltimore via Houston and the gulf states, Tampa FL to Baltimore in various Benzes. No issues with any of them. Tons of time at 100+ MPH
