Drivers who have or have had Toyo R888R tires

I'm trying to get an idea of really how noisy these tires are. I have a roadster, and I don't love annoying noise, but the R888R's seem like they have the launch grip I really want.

If you own or have owned these tires, could you tell me, in your opinion, how bad the noise is at normal cruising speeds? Say 60-70 mph?

Are there any other tires to consider if I want maximum grip besides PS4S and R888R?

Had those on my viper, but not on the AMG so not quite apples to apples. On Houston concrete freeways they were loud AF. They hooked pretty well though.

Looks like it may be a moot point anyway, Toyo says they do not have an R888R to fit the rear on a GT C.

Back to the drawing board.

GTC is 305/30/20 right? R888R come in 315/30/20. That should work.

Actually just got a second opinion from Toyo. Toyo recommends the 325/30/20 because the 315 does not have sufficient load rating.

So, the r888rs are back in play.

Thanks! I wonder how much difference concrete makes. Very little concrete on the east coast.

I have the R888R(19/20)and the PS4(20/21) and the grip is better on the R888R's but they are louder. The PS4 are pretty damn good overall. I mainly use the R888R when I do any kind of track event.

You have a full set of extra wheels and tires?

For 1/4 and 1/2 mile runs I wonder if it would be safe to switch just the rears to r888rs, and back again (to PS4S) for street use?

If there’s a better all round street tyre than the PS4S I’m not sure what it is, but I certainly would never recommend having a completely different brand of tyre on one end of the car versus keeping all 4 tyres of the same type.

I had R888R on the rear and PS4S on the front. I had 700whp and it hooked up in 2nd gear. A lot of roll racing guys run that setup across various platforms. But I honestly didn't like how the car behaved with mismatched tires. I think even more than the brand, having a regular street tire up front and R compound race tire in the back, I felt nervous pushing the car in turns.

Yea, it's fine for straight line stuff.

Thanks Kumizi. I think I'm going to roll the dice and get a full set of r888rs and just hope the noise doesn't bug me too much. I don't do much in the way of GT in this car, mostly weekend short drives and such. Maybe the noise at cruising speeds won't be too bad. I have watched a few youtube vids, some say they are very noisy, other say no big deal. I have a stage one tune and most of it is wasted with wheel spin so I want to try something different.

The noise isn't bad at all with just the rears. The older R888 were noisier.

They're much quieter on asphalt in my experience FWIW.

I am in need of replacing my tires, so the consensus is basically the Toyo's if you want hook up and live with the noise and Michelin's if you want DD "comfort" and less noise.
I wouldnt call my GTS a DD but I will not take it to the track.
So.... go with Toyos as they hook up better and live with the noise?
I live in the Chicagoland area so the roads here are.... well they are anything else but smooth, anywhere.

To be quite frank, if you aren't heavily modified, going with a wider than stock PS4S in the rear should be plenty.

PS4S is probably the right choice for 90% of people.

R888R for those with high hp that want every last bit of grip.

Thank you. Makes more sense for me to go with Michelin’s.

Ordered a set of R888Rs from Tire Rack today. Fronts are in stock, rears are 30-60 day backorder.

I found the rears at simple tire.com. They had 10 of the 315s in stock when I ordered. Never heard of them before, but I ordered the rears and had them in 4 days. My fronts should be here tomorrow from discount tire, so I can get them on in time for Gingerman this weekend.

Same here. Picked up a pair of 315/30/20 for the rears last week. (Fronts are good for another couple of track days.) After some shopping they seemed to be the only shop that had them in stock, including Tire Rack. The R888R have noticeable road noise, but are light years better than the old R888.

I am also looking to upgrade my stockers soon. I am considering the R888R’s. Don’t track much and the GTS is not my daily driver.

I am waiting on my HPFP do arrive, as have it installed along with an E85 tune and possibly meth just for extra cooling. Once I have attained my power goal, it will be time to upgrade the tires.

Regarding tire size how about going with 325/35/20 on the rear? If I have H&R’s, will it cause rubbing? I just thought a bit of a larger side wall can add a bit of cushion in potholes/cracks etc, and fill up the wheel well a bit more which are two nice benefits.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the tip! I was also able to find my 325/30/20's at Simple Tire. They had 4 and seem to be the only place in the country that has them in stock. Same price as everyone else too.

Looking forward to some Gs in first through third gear instead of listening to my tires spin.
