Has anyone changed spark plugs?

Hi hi all. I was wondering if anyone here has changed the spark plugs on their car. I have the directions and all from WIS but I still could use some insight. So there are several things in the way of removing the ignition coils. On the passenger side is a wire harness and on the driver side is a breather line. One needs to move these two items out of the way and that is exactly what I could use some insight on.

Anyone?

Katie

Hi Katie,

I have.

On the wiring harness on the pass side, there are two torx screws, one underneath the "box and one at the front end of the wiring tube. Remove both of those and move the harness out of the way. Then there is another Tube closer to the ign coils, bolted by torx screws towards the back of the motor must be removed. Another one on the driver's side too.

This is an exercise in patience!

When you remove the ign coils, make sure to use silicone grease on the coils when you reassemble.

Let me know how it's going.

Depending on when you're doing this, I might be able to supply you some pics if unclear, but prob not until tomorrow.

I got the grease for the coils. I am all set there. I got you on the wire harness on passenger side. For the driver side there is a breather tube that ends halfway down the length of the valve cover. It’s held on by four torx and then in front of the engine two more torx but after removing those screws it still appears to not mOve enough to get out of the way of the coils.

Hi Katie,

Did you get the left side? I was at Barrett Jackson yesterday evening and tried responding to you from my phone and memory. The left side is "messy" to put it nicely. I thought the right side (passenger's side) was easier.

So the other day I had the top cover off and silver heat shield off and six bolts off the driver side vent line that of which still was not loose enough to move. Here is the pic. I got a bit annoyed with how nothing was moving so I put it back together and decided upon further research such as asking the question here. Now the other picture I posted is the wire harness on the passenger side. There was a bolt I removed at the head end of the wire harness that would be close to the water pump but the harness was still held fast. I did not realize there was another screw under the harness so I got that. As I said I removed the silver heat shield and I am sure there are other items that have to be moved. Strangely the directions have you remove the computer, the aluminum strut that ends under the computer and by the firewall......... I somehow think that I dont need to remove these. I do of course have the lube for the coil boots, anti seize for the plugs. a torque wrench set at 9nm for the torx bits and another set at 22nm for the spark plugs and lastly the most important I have an air gun to blow out the plug holes prior to removing the old plugs.

I simply ran out of time to figure out how to get that wire harness and vent line out of the way.

Katie

Hi Katie,

On the driver's side, there is another bolt underneath everything and at the other end of that U-shaped tube. That is why it isn't going anywhere. Here is a rather bad pic (of a hard copy). Bolt #21 has to come out to free up that tube. On the passenger's side, when you get that far, the similar, but straight tube must be removed by the bolts toward the rear of the cylinder head, bolts #15 including the front one.

On the passenger's side, back to the big harness that is right on top, there is a screw right under the block itself. It must be removed. I used a torx socket on a swivel ext. Here is a pic of the BACK of the screw.

It is this screw and #19 on the next pic. Once you free up the big harness it can be swung out of the way. You don't want to unplug the ECU, but if need be, it just mounts on rubber grommets and you can lift it up and move everything out of the way. It might help too to remove the steel dress cover over the turbos. It too just lifts off of rubber mounts and snaps back in place.

I am very sure I removed bolt 21 and when I did as well as the other ones the breather tube moved a bit but it certainly did not feel free to move much more. I will take a picture if the bolt I removed and we can check if its 21.

So here are pics of the bolts I removed. So the two side by side bolts at the front of the engine I am pointing to. Then the four or five that hold the end to the valve cover. Am I missing something as to why it did not move much after removing these bolts?

Those are the correct ones. Pull the whole unit back towards the firewall. It should come out.

You pull it backwards towards the back of the engine and not out away from the engine. Ok I got it.. It must slide into a tube at the front of the engine and when you slide it backwards it releases.

What kind of silicon grease do you use? Is it dielectic grease?

Just talking to an independent mechanic and he said if you’re going to go in there and start pulling on the plugs, you might as well replace the coils as that everything gets brittle.

What gets brittle? THe coils or the coil boots?

I believe the boots. But for me, it’s a seven year deal, and I might as well just replace the coils for the same labor.

I guess it depends on how much the coils cost.
