If buying from a non-Merc dealer

Considering buying an AMG GT C Roadster from a non-Merc dealer. 2018 with 8K miles.

Would I ask them to take it to a Mercedes dealer for a Multi-Point Inspection? Or what would you recommend?

If they’re ok with it, I’d probably ask them to have MB do an inspection on it. If not, a reputable independent mechanic that works on amgs would be the way to go. My MB dealership told me that not all MB mechanics are qualified to service AMGs, they need an AMG tech which are far and few between. Would be worth it to get an inspection one way or another.

If they hesitate at all about taking it to a Mercedes dealer, that would throw a flag for me.

If you still decide to go forward, I would ask them to put the car up on a lift and see what the bottom side looks like. Buy a paint meter to go over each panel and then take it to a reputable mechanic and point out all of the things that you've learned from the forum. Ask the dealer to get a VMI from Mercedes, and ask them for the recent service documentation the previous owner provided to them. You want to minimize your exposure as much as possible.

Good Luck!

Most dealerships do send cars for inspection as long as you are the one paying for it.

I'd pass. I bought mine from a dealer and it's under CPO warranty until 2026. While I probably paid 5-6k more for it than I could have, I thought it was more than worth it. Peace of mind is everything for me. Same with my G550. The day they go out of warranty, I say good-bye.

Careful with the CPO warranty as it’s not the same as the mfr warranty. Mine is CPO’d too and needed my exhaust replaced and the dealer said it wasn’t covered. Said 80% percent of items are typically covered and my exhaust issue fell into the 20% bucket that was not. Not even fighting with MBUSA got it to be covered. Complete BS if you ask me.

There are two sides to the coin here:

I understand wanting the car thoroughly inspected and it's easy to come up with long lists of things to check. These will always be at your cost as a buyer, but they also come at the inconvenience of the seller. If the car is hot there is likely to be more than one buyer in this market. If you really want the car and request lots of checks, the next buyer might already be in the store and only wants to drive it and ready to buy (this actually happened to me recently on an R8). You have to weigh this in your decision and your desire for the car. If you insist on the inspections, you should probably try to tie up the car with a deposit which can also have a downside. I've private sold many cars in my past, cars that always had high interest and usually more than one interested party at a time. I'm going to favor the buyer with the shortest list of things for me to do even if it is at their cost. I have always provided a Carfax at my cost.

On the non-Mercedes dealer - These cars are often modded and/or tracked. There are Mercedes dealers now not willing to take a modded car in on trade or if they do they'll sent it to auction where the non-Mercedes dealers buy. So, it is possible the car at this dealer is one a Mercedes dealer wouldn't want to sell pre-owned. If it were me, I'd be more interested in whether the car at the non-Mercedes dealer has stock factory Cats and down tubes, stock intake, and a stock factory tune. I like mods, but I don't want to buy someone else's idea of what makes good mods.

I'm sure the Mercedes dealer will be glad to charge for a multipoint inspection. If it is a smaller town/city they might already know the car.

It turns out this dealer also owns a Mercedes dealership a few hours away in NY. They called me and said that they would be willing to ship the car to that dealership, certify the car, and give 3 years extended warranty (1 with the CPO plus 2 extra) for ~$8.500. A third party 3 year warranty was quoted at ~$6-7K. Does this way of getting a CPO sound like a good way to go?

Also, any thoughts on why they didn’t do this in the first place?

Those prices are highway robbery! For a manufactures extension through Freedom Warranty, 5 years / up to 100k miles, $4,995, covered for $275 an hour in labor, only $100 deductible, and repairs accepted at any Mercedes Benz dealer in North America, I just had a customer with a SLK get $2,220 in repairs at his Mercedes Benz dealer replacing engine and transmission mounts, and the passenger air scarf. For more information or to see an example contract you can contract me at (855)-924-1333 or tgibson@highline-autos.com

For sure get documentation checked out first with your Benz dealer to see what has been done on their end. If that checks out then work on getting it physically inspected by Benz tech.

Same thing here, same exact car as yours and same issue. CPO warranty is not bumper to bumper.
