Would you ever buy a lemon?

If you could buy a GTS for 85% of trade-in value (value for average condition), would you consider it? The CarFax indicates that the car was repurchased by Mercedes a year after the original sale due to a check engine light issue. The only info I have is that after the repurchase, spark plugs and ignition coils were replaced and the exhaust was repaired.

No way for 85% the price of a non-lemon same year GTS. The risks/hassle of actually trying to sell/trade it in the future would not be worth a 15% discount, unless like UCIMBZ states you plane on keeping the car for a very long time or are wanting to make a project car out of it; (Road Course/Time Attack, etc.).

I meant for 85% of the trade-in value of a car of the same year appraised in average condition. Would that you lead you to a different conclusion?

The short answer for me: No, I would never consider a Lemon, even with more significant valuation/price reduction than quoted.
Perhaps I am on the more extreme spectrum, but for me, too much uncertainty and risk of losing Time.
Time too valuable to risk wasting it on potential issues and multiple trips to Technician, with x number of days spent in shop, etc.

If those are risks you can swing, more power to you!
Best of luck

You're right. Wanted to pick up a super low mileage, highly optioned '16 GTS for $65k, but I think it only looks like a great deal on the front end. Thanks much for your input (and you as well Chassis, UCIMBZ and thebishman).

I've bought 4 lemons. All unintentionally. I would never buy a car that's been branded as a lemon. If I were to buy a used car. So far I've only bought one used car in my life. A 1971 BMW Bavaria 2800. Great car. I gave it to my GF in 1972 when I bought a 3.0CS and she ran the Bavaria into the ground -- 300,000 miles. No oil changes!

For the right price, sure. It would also depend heavily on the reason for the buyback. There are CA buybacks due to things like COMAND issues. I wouldn't buy one that had engine issues, like the one you're looking at.

If someone offered a 2020 GTR @ 25% of fair market value, even those who say they never would, would.
