Just because a few people have had issues with this transaxle and are vocal about it doesn’t mean these units are inherently problematic.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that most complaints come from users running Stage 1 or higher tunes. As I mentioned in a previous post, this transaxle is designed to handle 750Nm, with an upper limit of around 820Nm. Most Stage 1 tunes exceed 820Nm at low RPM, putting extra stress while on the first and second gears. THAT alone can lead to seal leaks and potentially more severe issues.

Note that even the AMG GT Black Series was limited to 800nm

the important thing and contrary to the Ferrari concept that this transaxle is “filled for life”, DO a fluid service every 30,000 miles or 3 years

also, extended warranty is always a good idea on this expensive to repair platform (unless you have abandon resource of funds)

then 750 Nm would be a safe limit under any condition, or maybe even 800?

I don’t know the inside details, but at the time, I got information from someone who used to work at Getrag. He clarified that our transaxle is rated for 750Nm (hence the part number 7DCL750 DCT). He also mentioned that pushing beyond 10% over 750Nm carries a high risk, which aligns with the 820Nm upper limit.

I assume AMG received clearance and warranty approval from Getrag to push 800Nm for the Black Series. but I haven’t seen any supporting documentation confirming this or about any modifications made to the transaxle to raise the limit. I also haven’t come across any official reference to the 820Nm limit.

I would assume that if literally EVERY single GT transmission failed because of this, there would be a class action suit.
So this is what I'd recommend if you're worried about it. Get a Fidelity warranty. I have a contact if you want it. And follow the recommended transmission services. That way, IF something does fail, your warranty will cover it. And YES, the Fidelity platinum warranty will cover it according to my Rep.
Can you message me your rep's contact info for the Fidelity Warranty? I am in the process of purchasing a GTS and want to make sure I am covered. Are you in CT (assumption from your username)?

Ah thanks. I have a quote from him but was hoping it might be more competitive. The quote thru Steingold Volvo for the same coverage and all is about $1500 cheaper, but thanks again for sharing.

Interesting. I just compared the amount I paid to Highline Autos in March 2024 for a 36-month/36,000-mile plan with a $250 deductible to the quote I received from Steingold today. I ran the comparison twice—once using the same mileage and plan details from March 2024, and again with my current mileage—and in both cases, Steingold’s quote for the Fidelity Platinum plan came between 17-23% lower.

I just checked and thought it was an even bigger difference but that was actually Gold coverage cost. The platinum is still just over $1k more from him. I sent him an email. Thanks again!

Does anyone know if this affects all GT’s? GT R’s were released a couple years later so were they updated at all? What about the facelifted 2020+? Any revisions in the part numbers between these cars?

for what I've found around, it seems that the issue was affecting earlier models only, then MB applied some countermeasure on production, but I couldn't find any production date or VIN cut number... guess face-lift models should be ok

I cant say for certain but i had the same question and looked in to this extensively online and at least from my search I havent seen any GT R owners with this issue. All the issues ive read about have come from the early GT S owners. I also called multiple dealers across the country and no one has seen any GT R with transmission issues. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Hey guys my trans on my 2020 GTC seems to be running really hot. It will get over 200f when sitting in traffic on a normal basis. Seen it get as high as 230f and this is not spirited driving this is just stop and go traffic. It starts acting weird when it gets around 200f. My question is does anyone have an official spec on “ Normal “ operating temperature for this transmission? Or what do you guys normally see temp wise when cruising and when sitting in traffic?

curious what others say too but at least from my experience, that sounds normal as trans temp in my 2019 gtr also gets to 90s C when im stuck in traffic which is around the 200 F mark.

I guess these cars just arent a fan of traffic especially since its a ‘dry’ dct as opposed to wet.

I reached out to Mercedes-Benz and they tell me the normal operating temperature for the transmission in a 2020 AMG GTC is 170° F - 225° F

sounds reasonable, but I believe that in hot weather, if driving on track (or very spirited on road), the DCT oil temp could exceed those 225° F quite easily..

I believe it could as well as I’ve hit 230F sitting in traffic. I love to find some good info on temps and effects on fluid. I came from a Nissan GT-R and there was a chart if the stored data shows the trans fluid hit certain temperatures it would effect the change interval.

after a little more digging and youtubing, it seems ALL these transmissions will eventually need to be rebuilt or replaced. Looks like ~8-10yr is the shelf life so thats probably why we arent hearing about GTR failures since they havent hit that 8yr mark yet.

Will be interesting to observe the next couple of years and whether that brings out more of the 2018 and 2019 owners complaining about trans issues.

2016 AMG GTS
I have a 2016 GTS now with over 120,000KM on it, about 75,000 miles for my American friends.Changed oil in it twice. Never had an issue and I drive it like it should be driven downshifting all the time. After reading all sorts of nonsense over the years I bought a complete engine torque tube and transaxle from an accidented GTC with about 3000 miles on it. Im pretty sure I can use the parts for my 2016 GTS. I was able to buy the complete tranaxle for $8000.00 CAD which is about $5700,00 USD. Have not used it yet but thought it was good for my peace of mind. If you are worried about transmission breakdown go buy a used one and hang onto it. For a car of this caliber it's a cheap price to pay....CHANGE YOUR OIL in transmission often!!!!
