Transmission shifts up extra gear in manual mode

2016 AMG gt s

in sport plus manual mode. When I use the paddles to shift up sometimes it jumps an extra gear.

so 1 to 3 and 2 to 4 instead of 1 to 2 and 2 to 3

any thoughts on this?

First off, are you in permanent manual mode or temporary manual mode? If you don't know what the difference is, temporary manual mode is entered if you just start using the paddles. Permanent manual mode is entered if you press the M button in the center console.

In temporary manual mode the transmission still automatically upshifts near redline, so if you are winding it out and then try to shift manually you may catch it late and it registers your manual upshift as a second upshift, after it did the automatic upshift already.

If you are in permanent manual mode and this happens, then you may have a worn out shift paddle, which does happen. This can cause the switch to bounce and making contact multiple times making the transmission think you pressed it twice in rapid succession.

I think Superswiss nailed it. I have had a paddle problem on another car cause this. The same with not being in the true manual mode by engaging the manual button.

Thanks for your replies

I always run in permanent manual mode.

I agree it could be a worn paddle shifter

Will need to get it looked at

cheers

Try a more deliberate "pull" on the paddle in question and also try to keep it from snapping back as that may help avoid that for the time being.

Check these out. I can't recommend the JQ Werks magnetic paddles more highly. I have not used them in the GT R but I have used them in Porsche/Audi applications and they are fantastic. They shouldn't be hard for you to fit yourself. You should email them for the correct ones for your car if you decide to go that route.

Funny thing to add, this problem seems temperature specific as it seems only to occur at around 10 degrees (50 Fahrenheit)

When in manual mode I noticed that the dash will indicate the gear and suggest that you upshift, ie, like the old upshift light used in cars back in the 80's. Don't know if your car has that but my 2018 GT R does.

My car has the exact same problem. I've deduced it to be mechanical switch bounce as superswiss mentioned. The mating contacts on the switch are getting worn out and are subject to variations in temp / humidity, that's why you are seeing it happen at different rates. They should have used optical switches for the paddles
